On April 23, 2021, Reel People release sublime three-track EP Hearts Collide. Produced by the collective’s core trio Oli Lazarus, Mike Patto and Toni Economides, Hearts Collide combines classic Reel People groove with current R&B stylings and delivers a uniquely soulful sound that’s impossible to shake.

Opener Deja Vu puts us, rather aptly, in mind of things that have already come to pass. Featuring Grammy-nominated US singer-songwriter Raheem DeVaughn, the track layers heavenly vocals over blissful beats, keys and bass guitar – a silky-smooth soul sonnet that at once reminds of Reel People’s renown for quality production whilst reaching entirely new emotional highs.

Atlanta-based chanteuse Paula, meanwhile, rides the acoustic peaks and troughs of Vibe with remarkable finesse, movingly conveying the ecstasies of love in her sincere and utterly spellbinding delivery. She switches things up on Fly, where dexterous vocal runs meet swaggering production for an empowering call-to-arms cut that urges sass and self-confidence.

Reel People’s incredible heart ‘n’ soul story is well documented – acclaimed album releases Second Guess and Seven Ways To Wonder, high-spec compilations Golden Lady, Retroflections and Retroflections Remixed and, through it all, an impressive roll call of collaborations including Angie Stone, Tony Momrelle, Omar, Navasha Daya, Chantae Cann, Michael Champion, Eric Roberson, Dayne Jordan and Arrested Development’s Speech.

With the release of single I Never Knew (featuring Speech) and follow-up EP Dancing On The Moon late last year, Reel People heralded its first new material in over a decade. New songs, new vibes, but the same soulful soothe, groove and sparkle. Recent single outings for Deja Vu and Vibe have built further momentum and now arrives Hearts Collide, and the prospect of further original releases in the months ahead. We can expect plenty of soul-nourishing Reel People goodness for 2021 and beyond.
