Vocal Showcase Hits the Right Notes for International Jazz Day at UKZN

30 April 2025 @ 5:00 pm – 11:00 pm

Vocal Showcase | International Jazz Day – 30 April | Centre for Jazz and Popular Music

On Wednesday, 30 April 2025, the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Centre for Jazz and Popular Music will host a Vocal Showcase to mark International Jazz Day—a global celebration initiated by UNESCO to highlight jazz as a force for unity, dialogue, and creativity.

This special event is part of the Centre’s week-long programme titled “Who’s Got the Map?”, held in partnership with the Centre for Creative Arts (CCA) and the South African Association for Jazz Education (SAJE). The programme pays tribute to South African jazz pianist Andile Yenana’s influential 2005 album, asking us to reflect on where we are and where we’re headed—together, through jazz.

A Celebration of Voice and Connection

The Vocal Showcase promises to be an intimate and emotional performance spotlighting accomplished jazz vocalist and educator Natalie Rungan, alongside talented vocalists from UKZN’s Jazz Studies programme. More than just a performance, this showcase is a sonic journey that explores the power of the human voice to tell stories, trace emotional landscapes, and express the questions we carry in uncertain times.

“Jazz vocals are about more than melody—they’re about soul, storytelling, and connection. This showcase gives our students a platform to share their voices and engage in the deep tradition of vocal jazz, all while honouring the theme: Who’s Got the Map?”

says Neil Gonsalves, Director of the Centre for Jazz and Popular Music

A Must-Attend for Jazz Lovers

Whether you’re a seasoned jazz enthusiast or new to the genre, the Vocal Showcase offers a moving and uplifting experience that reflects the collaborative, improvisational spirit of jazz. It also reaffirms the Centre’s role as a nurturing ground for South Africa’s next generation of jazz talent.

Join the celebration and let the voices of jazz guide you. For more on the full week of events, visit the Centre for Jazz and Popular Music’s Facebook page: facebook.com/UKZNJazzcentre
