Melville’s Winter Music Season Begins with JAZZLAB’s Experimental Jazz Experience

22 May @ 5:00 pm

As Johannesburg’s nightlife culture continues evolving away from oversized commercial experiences and back toward more intentional, emotionally immersive spaces, one venue in Melville is quietly redefining what live music can feel like.

chiesa di PAZZO LUPi has steadily emerged as one of the city’s most compelling homes for intimate, instrument-led performance culture where jazz, chamber music, architecture, food, and atmosphere intersect in deeply memorable ways.

This winter, the venue unveils a carefully curated three-part live music programme featuring experimental jazz collective JAZZLAB, the acclaimed Pangea String Quartet, and contemporary South African jazz pianist Wowo Mndau.

Rather than simply hosting performances, the Melville-based venue is crafting experiences centered around warmth, listening, atmosphere, and artistic connection something increasingly rare within the modern nightlife landscape.

With soft lighting, outdoor heaters, close-quarter acoustics, and audiences seated near enough to feel every shift in rhythm and improvisation, the venue transforms live music into something deeply personal.

The experience extends beyond the stage itself. Guests are welcomed into a warm, sun-filled setting complemented by winter comfort foods, light meals, and signature oven-grilled tomato soup served with cheesy toasted Piadina fingers reinforcing the venue’s growing reputation as a sensory cultural destination rather than simply another event space.

JAZZLAB Brings Experimental Energy to Melville

The winter programme opens on Friday, 22 May 2026, with JAZZLAB, an electric and experimental jazz collective heavily inspired by the cutting-edge UK jazz movement.

Known for blending live instrumentation with analog textures, layered grooves, and electronic effects, the collective’s performances are rooted in improvisation and spontaneous musical exploration. Their sound moves fluidly between timeless jazz traditions and future-facing sonic experimentation.

The ensemble features Snalithemba Nkambule, Michael Zulu, Tumelo “TuKs” Mathabela, Aubrey Junior Matsila, Themba Mhlongo, and Phumudzo Madula musicians expected to deliver a performance driven by collective interplay, rhythm, storytelling, and immersive atmosphere.
