Tyla Brings the A*POP Era Home to Johannesburg
16 August @ 9:00 am – 5:00 pm
Tyla has spent the past few years taking South African sound to some of the biggest stages in the world. Now, with APOP* firmly in the global conversation, the Johannesburg-born superstar is bringing the celebration back home.
On Sunday, 16 August 2026, Gold Reef City will host the A*POP Takeover, presented in partnership with South African Tourism and powered by Absa.
But this is more than another celebrity appearance.

From Johannesburg to the World
For a generation of young South Africans watching African artists break through internationally, Tyla’s journey represents something bigger: proof that global ambition does not require abandoning where you come from.
Her latest album, APOP*, released on 24 July, pushes her signature Popiano sound further into global pop territory, blending pop, R&B, amapiano-inspired rhythms, house and distinctly South African influences.
The 14-track project also reflects the increasingly borderless nature of African creativity, bringing South African names including MaWhoo, Babalwa M and Liquideep into the project alongside international collaborator Zara Larsson.
The result is music that can move between Johannesburg and the rest of the world without losing its identity.

The Tygers Get Their Moment
Perhaps the most meaningful part of the homecoming is who the celebration is really for: the fans.
Known as the Tygers, Tyla’s supporters have followed the journey from local breakthrough to international superstardom. The A*POP Takeover gives them an opportunity to become part of the story rather than simply watch it unfold.
Fans can create TikTok videos using any song from APOP* for a chance to win tickets to the Gold Reef City Fan Appreciation Day.
It is a smart reflection of how today’s music culture works. Fans are no longer passive audiences. They remix, dance, create trends, build communities and help songs travel across borders.

Bringing the Celebration Closer
South African Tourism will also provide transport for fans from different parts of Gauteng, opening the experience to young people who might otherwise struggle to get to the event.
That detail matters.
Tyla’s homecoming is being positioned not only as entertainment, but as an opportunity to inspire young South Africans to see their own creativity as something capable of travelling far beyond the country’s borders.
Her own numbers tell the story. APOP* reached No. 1 on Billboard’s World Albums chart, while Tyla has continued to build on her historic run across international charts and two GRAMMY wins for Best African Music Performance.
Yet her message remains rooted in home.
“Whenever I’m home, I feel like myself again,”.
Tyla says
When the World Looks Back at Johannesburg
Tyla’s rise has made South African musical identity part of a much bigger global conversation.
On 16 August, Gold Reef City becomes the meeting point between that global success and the city that helped shape it.
APOP* might be travelling the world, but for one day, Johannesburg gets the homecoming.
And for the young creatives watching, the message is clear: your sound, your story and your roots can belong on the biggest stage in the world.
