ORMS x Canon: Where Photography Becomes Art

When the Camera Becomes a Creative Voice

A photograph can document a moment. But it can also challenge the way we see it.

That idea sits at the heart of the seventh ORMS x Canon Sea Point Promenade Photographic Exhibition, which is returning to one of Cape Town’s most recognisable public spaces with a new theme: The Art of Photography.

For young creatives navigating a world dominated by Instagram feeds, smartphone cameras and endless visual content, the competition asks a more interesting question: what makes an image feel like art rather than simply a picture?

There is no prescribed subject this year. Portraits, landscapes, architecture, still life, abstraction and conceptual photography are all welcome.

What matters is perspective.

Your Eye Is the Difference

The competition is looking beyond technically perfect images. It wants photographers to demonstrate intention — through composition, lighting, colour, timing, perspective, subject matter and editing.

That makes this year’s challenge less about owning the most sophisticated camera and more about developing a distinctive visual language.

An ordinary street corner can become a story. A familiar face can reveal something unexpected. A fleeting moment can become an image that makes someone stop walking.

For emerging South African photographers, that creative freedom could be the most valuable part of the opportunity.

From Your Screen to the Streets

The biggest shift happens when the winning images leave the digital world.

Twenty photographs will be selected for a large-scale outdoor exhibition along the Sea Point Promenade, turning the public walkway into an open-air celebration of South African photographic perspectives.

It is an important distinction in an age where creative work can disappear into an algorithm within hours.

Instead of living on a phone screen or inside a gallery, these photographs will become part of the physical environment — encountered by residents, tourists, commuters and anyone taking a walk beside the Atlantic.

The platform has already featured 120 photographers across six exhibitions, with tens of thousands of entries and more than R500,000 in prizes awarded.

R100,000 Up for Grabs

The seventh edition raises the stakes with R100,000 in prizes.

The first prize, valued at R65,000, includes a Canon EOS R8 body with an RF 28–70mm f/2.8 lens and a R10,000 ORMS Print Room voucher. Second prize is valued at R20,000, while third place receives a prize package worth R15,000.

Entries opened on 19 August and close on 16 September 2026.

Photographers can submit unlimited entries, with five images allowed per submission. Images must be landscape format and JPEG, with finalists later required to provide high-resolution TIFF files for A0 printing.

Ultimately, the competition is less interested in what photographers own than what they see.

The challenge is simple: show Cape Town — and South Africa — the world through your eyes.
