Tariq, played by Elton Landrew, receives devastating news when his estranged daughter dies in a car accident. Left behind is his seven-year-old granddaughter, Katinka.

Grief becomes complicated when Tariq suddenly has an opportunity to reconnect with a family he thought was permanently out of reach.

It is a reminder that reconciliation does not always arrive when we expect it — sometimes it arrives after the damage has already been done.

Then there is Marco, played by Neels van Jaarsveld, whose story challenges traditional ideas about sacrifice and success.

He spent a decade putting his career aside to raise his children while his wife, Cecile, pursued her political ambitions. Now he wants to return to the workplace, only to discover that getting back on the ladder is harder than stepping away from it.

For many South African families navigating changing gender roles and economic pressures, that tension feels particularly relevant.

Trust Can Change Everything

Eben’s storyline brings another layer to the series.

He has built a stable life for his daughter, but that stability is threatened when her biological mother returns to South Africa wanting to reconnect.

On paper, having both parents involved sounds straightforward. Real life rarely is.

Old wounds, complicated emotions and questions of trust force Eben to consider whether doing what is best for his daughter might also mean confronting his own unresolved feelings.

And then there is Bernard.

His relationship with teenage son Reynard has deteriorated under years of frustration and resentment. A confrontation surrounding an alleged affair pushes their already fragile relationship towards breaking point.

The resulting car accident leaves the family facing consequences that could reshape everything.

What makes the premiere interesting is that none of these fathers is presented as having all the answers.

Instead, Beter as Gister explores the messy middle ground of family life — the mistakes, sacrifices, secrets and second chances that rarely make it into the polished version of a family story.

Episode 2 promises to push those tensions even further, with Tariq beginning his relationship with Katinka, Eben confronting the return of his daughter’s mother, Marco fighting to reclaim his career and Bernard and Reynard dealing with the fallout from their actions.
