A$AP Rocky Rewrites the PUMA Suede ’94
Some sneakers are designed for a season. Others become part of the culture.
The PUMA Suede belongs firmly in the second category. Now, A$AP Rocky is reaching back into the brand’s archive to revive a ’90s icon, giving the PUMA Suede ’94 a new identity shaped by nostalgia, New York street culture and his own creative language.
For South Africa’s sneaker-obsessed generation, this is more than another celebrity collaboration. It is a reminder that the past can still influence what comes next.

When Nostalgia Gets a New Look
Rocky’s relationship with the Suede goes beyond fashion.
As PUMA’s Creative Director, he has spent more than three years exploring the brand’s heritage through his own cultural lens. For the Suede ’94, that meant returning to a silhouette connected to a formative period in his life.
The inspiration is deeply personal.
Rocky remembers his mother buying him his first pair of Suedes and recalls seeing basketball legend Walt “Clyde” Frazier wearing the shoes while growing up in New York.
That personal connection gives the revival a different energy. This isn’t simply a vintage-inspired sneaker designed to cash in on ’90s nostalgia. It is a piece of Rocky’s visual and cultural memory being translated into a contemporary sneaker.

The ’90s, Reconstructed
The original era surrounding the Suede ’94 was a collision of influences.
New York’s hip-hop Golden Era, emerging streetwear culture and downtown skateboarding all helped shape the way sneakers were worn and understood.
Rocky’s version taps into that history without simply reproducing it.
The sneaker features a raw-edge padded tongue, retro woven label and slimmer tooling. Gold detailing on the PUMA lace keeper adds a premium touch, while a custom shoebox reinforces the collaboration’s collector appeal.
But the standout detail is arguably the full retro PUMA logo across the quarter panel — a feature that has never appeared on another iteration of the Suede.

Why It Matters Here
South Africa has its own deep sneaker culture, where archive silhouettes, limited drops and international collaborations can become markers of identity.
That makes the Suede ’94 particularly relevant.
The appeal isn’t only about owning something associated with A$AP Rocky. It is about how a global cultural figure takes an old design, attaches personal meaning to it and makes it feel relevant again.
For a generation constantly remixing music, fashion and visual culture, that approach feels familiar.
The message is simple: heritage doesn’t have to mean standing still.
The A$AP Rocky x PUMA Suede ’94 is priced at R2,599 and is available in South Africa through PUMA.com, PUMA retail stores and Shelflife.
The next chapter, it seems, still has room for a classic.
