SP5DER Rewrites Football Style With adidas Originals

Football has never stayed on the pitch for long. From terraces to music videos, street corners to fashion weeks, the sport has become a global language of style. Now, adidas Originals and SP5DER are pushing that crossover even further.

Their latest collaboration takes football’s visual codes and throws them into the world of unapologetic streetwear, introducing the adidas x SP5DER F50 Formotion alongside a complete head-to-toe collection.

For South Africa‘s sneaker and streetwear crowd, it is less about simply wearing football gear and more about what happens when football becomes a canvas for self-expression.

When Football Leaves the Pitch

At the centre of the collaboration is the new F50 Formotion silhouette, a sneaker that deliberately refuses to sit neatly in one category.

SP5DER reshapes adidas’ Formotion tooling, originally developed for running, with design cues inspired by the iconic Adizero F50 III football cleat.

The result is a retro-meets-futuristic runner featuring a silver zig-zag mesh upper, leather overlays and flashes of pink. A lenticular badge, SP5DER heel graphic and metal hangtag add the kind of details designed to turn heads beyond the stadium.

It is football-inspired, but it is not football uniform.

And that distinction is important.

A Full Look, Not Just Another Sneaker

The collaboration expands into a full apparel and accessories collection, creating a visual language that can move from the street to the stands.

A football jersey carries a vinyl SP5DER logo on the chest and web graphic across the back, while matching shorts complete the look.

The track top and track pants introduce rhinestone Three Stripes and SP5DER branding, while custom goalkeeper gloves and a cap bring the collection’s rebellious personality into the smaller details.

For a generation that treats sneakers, jerseys and accessories as part of the same cultural conversation, the head-to-toe approach makes sense.

Lamine Yamal Sets the Tone

The campaign also features football superstar Lamine Yamal, who appears in a fictionalised locker room preparing for the moment.

Rather than presenting football stardom as purely athletic, the campaign leans into attitude, individuality and confidence.

That feels particularly relevant to today’s football audience, where players are increasingly cultural figures whose influence stretches into fashion, music and lifestyle.

Yamal becomes part of SP5DER and adidas‘ wider proposition: the modern football star does not have to choose between performance and personality.

Why It Matters for Streetwear Culture

South Africa already has a deep relationship with football fashion. Jerseys, sneakers and tracksuits regularly move between match days, music culture and everyday street style.

The adidas x SP5DER collaboration taps directly into that fluidity.

Instead of asking whether something belongs to football or fashion, it asks a more interesting question: why can’t it belong to both?

The adidas x SP5DER collection launched on adidas.co.za from 4 July, with prices ranging from R1,299 to R3,799.

For the style-conscious football fan, the message is clear: the beautiful game is no longer just influencing what happens on the pitch. It is influencing how the culture around it gets dressed.
