Meet the Women of Stokvel

Mzansi Magic has released the first-look teaser for its highly anticipated new Monday night drama, Stokvel, set to premiere on 3 August 2026 at 20:00.

The series explores the power of friendship, loyalty and betrayal through the lives of four women whose decade-long bond is tested after an unexpected betrayal shakes the very foundation of their trusted stokvel.

A Story of Sisterhood and Secrets

At the heart of Stokvel are Mary, Cynthia, Bathabile and Puleng, four women who have shared membership in the same stokvel group for nearly ten years. Their relationship has grown far beyond financial contributions, becoming a lifelong sisterhood built on trust, support and shared life experiences.

That bond is threatened when Palesa, the niece of one of the women, infiltrates their close-knit circle. Her actions spark deception, heartbreak and growing suspicion, forcing each woman to confront hidden truths while questioning the friendships they once believed were unbreakable.

Meet the Female-Led Cast

Leading the drama is an accomplished ensemble cast featuring:

  • Harriet Manamela as Mary
  • Motsoaledi Setumo as Puleng
  • Nobuhle Mahlasela as Cynthia
  • Leera Mthethwa as Bathabile
  • Lerato Mahlasela as Palesa, whose arrival changes everything.

More Than Money

For the cast, Stokvel highlights the deeper meaning behind one of South Africa‘s most cherished community traditions.

Harriet Manamela reflected on growing up watching her own mother participate in a stokvel, saying she learned that these groups represent far more than financial savings.

According to Harriet, stokvels are built on helping one another, creating strong communities and supporting families through life’s most difficult moments, including times of bereavement.

Motsoaledi Setumo believes the series celebrates the strength of women working together.

She explains that stokvels demonstrate women’s natural leadership, resilience and ability to stretch every rand while ensuring their families are cared for. For her, stokvels are a reminder that women have always been capable leaders within their homes and communities.

Leera Mthethwa says the emotional support found in stokvels is just as valuable as the financial benefits.

She believes they provide women with a safe space where friendships flourish, where members look out for one another and where encouragement, compassion and companionship become just as important as the monthly contributions.

Nobuhle Mahlasela recalls childhood memories of watching her mother and her friends transform stokvel gatherings into joyful celebrations.

She remembers women dressing in their finest clothes, bringing out their best dinnerware and preparing memorable meals together. To her, stokvels offered women an opportunity to celebrate themselves, enjoy meaningful friendships and find emotional support beyond their everyday responsibilities.

A Drama Rooted in South African Culture

With themes of loyalty, family, trust and community, Stokvel promises to deliver an emotionally engaging story while honouring the cultural significance of stokvels in South African society.

As friendships are tested and long-buried secrets come to light, viewers can expect compelling performances from an exceptional female-led cast in what looks set to become one of Mzansi Magic‘s standout dramas of 2026.

Stokvel premieres on Mzansi Magic on Monday, 3 August 2026 at 20:00.
