kykNET Launches Die 1%-klub in South Africa

kykNET is set to raise the stakes in South African television entertainment with the launch of Die 1%-klub, the local adaptation of the internationally successful game show The 1% Club. The Afrikaans-language version will premiere later this year and promises to bring a fresh twist to traditional quiz shows.

The channel secured the South African broadcast rights for the hit format, which has already enjoyed massive success in countries including the UK, the US, Germany, Spain, France and Australia. Produced locally by Rapid Blue, part of BBC Studios, the show is expected to become one of the year’s most exciting television events.

This latest acquisition further strengthens kykNET’s reputation for delivering world-class adaptations to Afrikaans audiences. Previous successes include the International Emmy-nominated Die brug and the hugely popular Wie word ’n miljoenêr?.

Waldimar Pelser, M-Net Director for Premium Channels, said the team immediately recognised the potential of the format.

“Our team simply fell in love with this format when BBC Studios showed it to us last year. The kykNET audience loves studio game shows, and it was no small task to find a format that could equal the adrenalin rush of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?. We believe Die 1%-klub – testing logic and common sense in a humorous way, instead of general knowledge – is the right show to do it.”

said Pelser

Grant Flynn, Chief Creative Officer at Rapid Blue, added that the show’s appeal lies in its accessibility and inclusivity.

“At Rapid Blue, we are passionate about creating content that entertains while truly connecting with audiences. Die 1%-klub celebrates sharp thinking in a playful, inclusive way that resonates with viewers across generations.”

How Die 1%-klub Works

Unlike traditional quiz shows that rely heavily on trivia knowledge, Die 1%-klub focuses on logic, critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.

The game starts with relatively easy questions that 90% of South Africans should be able to answer. As rounds progress, the challenges become increasingly difficult, eventually reaching questions that only the top 1% can solve.

Contestants discover whether they fall into the top 75%, 40%, 10% or elite 1% according to the show’s format metric.

Each of the 100 contestants starts with R1 000. Wrong answers eliminate players while their money is added to the growing jackpot. Remaining contestants then face the difficult choice of taking a share of the prize money or risking everything for a shot at proving they belong among the country’s sharpest minds.

With strategy, pressure and quick thinking at the heart of the format, the show promises edge-of-your-seat entertainment.

Entries Officially Open

South Africans aged 18 and older can now apply to be part of the groundbreaking game show. Entries can be submitted through the official kykNET website or by emailing die1persent-klub@rapidblue.com.

Filming will take place in Johannesburg, with participants responsible for arranging their own transport.

One of the biggest attractions is the accessibility of the competition. No formal qualifications are required, meaning anyone from students and retirees to artisans and academics can stand a chance of walking away with a share of R100 000.

International versions of The 1% Club have become famous for showcasing ordinary people with extraordinary problem-solving abilities, proving that intelligence comes in many forms.

The host of Die 1%-klub is expected to be announced soon, adding even more anticipation ahead of the show’s South African debut.
