Fashion collaborations can sometimes feel like two logos sharing the same product. The new BIRKENSTOCK x ETRO partnership takes a different route, putting two very recognisable design languages into conversation.
First unveiled at ETRO’s Fall/Winter 2026 runway show during Milan Fashion Week, the collaboration brings together BIRKENSTOCK’s famously functional approach with ETRO’s maximalist Italian craftsmanship.

For South African fashion audiences, the first chapter lands with an especially familiar silhouette: the Boston clog.
A 50-Year-Old Icon Gets a New Identity
The Boston has been part of BIRKENSTOCK’s story since 1976, and 2026 marks its 50th anniversary.
Rather than reinventing the clog from scratch, ETRO works within its established shape, layering its own visual vocabulary across the design.

Paisley motifs, embroidered details, Western-inspired buckles and Pegasus-branded rivets give the Boston a noticeably more expressive personality.
The result sits somewhere between heritage footwear and contemporary street style — a combination that speaks to a generation increasingly comfortable mixing luxury pieces with everyday wardrobes.

When Function Meets Fashion
At the heart of the collection remains BIRKENSTOCK’s anatomically shaped cork-latex footbed.
That matters because the collaboration isn’t simply about making an existing icon look different. The construction retains the functional foundation associated with the German footwear house, while ETRO introduces its distinctive aesthetic codes.
The footbed is wrapped in tonal leather, while the outsole creates another subtle meeting point between the brands.

BIRKENSTOCK’s signature bone-pattern tread incorporates ETRO’s Paisley motif, meaning the collaboration reveals itself even from underneath.
Earthy Tones, Rich Details
The colour palette keeps things grounded.
Taupe, chocolate and natural tones give the collection a sophisticated foundation, while polished hardware and metallic accents bring a contemporary edge.

It is a balance that makes the Boston particularly versatile. Styled with relaxed denim, tailored trousers or more experimental streetwear, the shoe has enough personality to become the statement rather than simply another accessory.
And that versatility is perhaps the most interesting part of the collaboration.
For today’s urban consumer, heritage doesn’t necessarily mean traditional. It can mean taking something with decades of history and making it feel relevant to how people dress now.

The First Chapter Has Arrived in South Africa
The first BIRKENSTOCK by ETRO chapter, featuring the Boston, launches in South Africa on 10 September 2026, exclusively at the BIRKENSTOCK store at the V&A Waterfront and online.
The Gizeh version will also form part of the collaboration, although its availability is global rather than South African.

This is only the beginning, with further chapters of the BIRKENSTOCK and ETRO partnership set to be revealed in the coming months.
For a fashion scene increasingly interested in the intersection of comfort, identity and statement dressing, the collaboration offers another reminder that classic pieces don’t have to stay in the past.
Sometimes, they just need a new language.
