In an emotionally charged episode that left viewers stunned, The Taste Master SA delivered one of its most unexpected twists yet: a double elimination. Fan favourites Xolile Makutoana and Meggan Volkwyn were both sent home after a tough fine-dining dessert challenge hosted at The Happy Uncles — South Africa’s first Halaal fine-dining restaurant.
Under the expert guidance of Chef Anwar, the contestants were tasked with creating desserts that not only showcased technical finesse but also embodied the elegant spirit of Michelin-level dining. The stakes were high, the expectations even higher, and despite their passion and skill, both Xolile and Meggan’s dishes didn’t meet the brief.
Xolile Reflects: Embracing Challenges and Homegrown Dreams

For Xolile, the elimination brought mixed emotions.
“It was definitely tough, especially knowing it was a double elimination. I had a game plan, but the stress of the situation made it difficult.”
he admits
His dessert, designed to express joy, leaned toward bold and homey rather than refined and elegant.
“Looking back, I realize I should have focused more on elegance. Fine dining is all about subtlety and sophistication,”.
he reflects
Despite the outcome, Xolile stands by his passion for baking that blends tradition with innovation.
“I always try to make something that’s accessible — using ordinary ingredients that still surprise and delight.”
Now, he’s turning his energy toward growing his brand, Explorer Cake SA, and hopes to one day open his own bakery.
“I want to study culinary arts and keep evolving my skills. This experience was just the beginning.”
Meggan’s Journey: Nerves, New Flavours, and Grand-Maternal Wisdom

For Meggan, the realisation of a double elimination intensified the pressure.
“As if a fine-dining dessert wasn’t enough of a challenge, my nerves were through the roof!”
While she experimented with flavours inspired by Chef Anwar’s masterclass, she admits she may have made the wrong technical choices.
“I shouldn’t have made a frozen element — maybe something more along the lines of a koeksister with coffee crémeux and caramel would’ve worked better.”
Her love for baking was instilled by her grandmother, whose timeless advice still rings true:
“A tidy kitchen is a functional kitchen, and baking is muscle memory.”
Though her time on the show has ended, Meggan is more inspired than ever to build her dream café and baking school for kids.
“This experience helped me visualize what that space could be. My home kitchen is now a test lab for all the ideas I have!”
She also credits the show with helping her embrace her creativity.
“I’ve learned to be more innovative and resilient. Chef Zola’s feedback was a springboard — she really helps you grow.”
Though their journey on The Taste Master SA has come to an end, both Xolile and Meggan walk away with lessons, growth, and clearer visions for the future. As the competition continues, their impact on the show — and on viewers — remains undeniable.
