Following months and months of hard work and toil, Makhosazane Ntshangase from the Lindiwe Kuzwayo Academy of Fashion was crowned the winner of the 2019 Vodacom Durban July Young Designer Award presented by Durban Fashion Fair at the 2019 Vodacom Durban July at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Saturday.
With the theme for the year being ‘Stars of Africa’ Ntshangase, who is in her second year of fashion design, used the brown and whites of young zebras as the inspiration for her outfit.
“I wanted to use the new-born zebra as an example of having to get going as soon as you start,” Ntshangase said. “It represents my start in fashion design and that I have had to learn so quickly in the year and a bit that I have been studying fashion design.
“There were so many incredible outfits here and I am still in a bit of shock that I managed to win against so many talented designers.”
The win here and the plethora of prizes will go a long way in kick-starting the career of the young designer.
“If I need to apply for anything in the future I will need to have a good portfolio of experience and this award is going to help so much in giving me that platform that I need to achieve my goals.
“I am still trying to come to terms with this! It’s an incredible feeling especially because all the designers up here could have won.”
For all of the student designers it has been a difficult and stressful time getting their concepts and theories into a physical garment with the panel of judges eventually deciding that the top prize should go to Ntshangase with Siphiwo Treasure Buthelezi from Durban University of Technology finishing in second place while fellow DUT student Tanyaradzwan Tirivanhu finished third.
The Vodacom Durban July takes place at Hollywoodbets Greyville Racecourse on Saturday 6 July 2019. More information can be found at www.vodacomdurbanjuly.co.za
