After years of nurturing other artists and building creative platforms, the multi-talented Mathunzi Macdonald steps back into the limelight with Mathunzi on Soul and Jazz, a soulful and intimate performance that reintroduces her as a musician, storyteller, and cultural force.

Set to take place on 4 December at Malwandle’s House (99 Juta Street, Braamfontein, Johannesburg), this exclusive showcase offers a foretelling of Mathunzi’s artistic journey, previewing new musical works and creative projects that weave together her roots in jazz, soul, and African expression.

Tickets are available at R250 on Quicket and R300 at the door, with doors opening at 6 PM.

A Creative Homecoming

Mathunzi’s return to the stage is not just a performance — it’s a creative homecoming. Having spent the past few years focusing on mentorship and production through her company, The Verse Productions, she has been instrumental in developing emerging talent and curating authentic artistic spaces across South Africa.

Now, she turns the spotlight inward, reaffirming her own voice as an artist. Mathunzi on Soul and Jazz is a reflection of her personal and professional evolution — a celebration of her musical roots, her versatility, and her unwavering commitment to storytelling through sound.

The Artist Behind the Name

Born in Mpumalanga, Mathunzi is a writer, producer, actress, and musician whose career has spanned over a decade across multiple creative disciplines. Raised in a musically rich Seventh-Day Adventist home, she was surrounded by gospel harmonies, jazz records, and stage performances from an early age.

Her artistic journey began on stage in 2003 as Nancy in Oliver Twist, later expanding into modeling, poetry, and television. After moving to Johannesburg in 2010, she signed with Star Model Management and appeared in campaigns for Nedbank, Uber Black, and Savanna. Her breakout TV role came in 2013 as Bongi on SABC 1’s My Perfect Family, establishing her as a household name.

Music with Purpose: Mathunzi and The Verse

In music, Mathunzi performs under Mathunzi and The Verse, a genre-fluid ensemble blending soul, gospel, jazz, and African rhythms. Collaborating with long-time partners like Teboho Kobedi (DiTeboho) and Thulani Sithela, her performances are known for their depth, emotion, and authenticity.

Her discography includes her 2013 debut single “In the Business”, followed by 2024 releases “Inhliziyo” (featuring Kabomo) and “Guguletho” — a heartfelt ode to home and belonging. These tracks showcase her evolution as both a musician and storyteller, merging theatre’s narrative discipline with the improvisational freedom of jazz.

A Visionary Leader and Mentor

Through The Verse Productions, Mathunzi has directed and produced a range of projects that spotlight African voices and stories. The company has worked with notable artists such as Dudu Makhoba, DiTeboho, Thami Mahlangu, and Rorisang Sechele, offering mentorship, training, and creative production support.

Her mission remains clear: to create art that uplifts, educates, and transforms, ensuring that her work — whether on stage, screen, or in song — contributes meaningfully to South Africa’s cultural and educational landscape.

A Night of Soul, Story, and Song

Mathunzi on Soul and Jazz is more than a concert — it’s an experience of rebirth. A testament to the power of music as memory, healing, and identity. Through this performance, Mathunzi Macdonald invites audiences to witness her journey — not as an actress or producer, but as Mathunzi the Musician: soulful, grounded, and timeless.
