Strictly Soul Johannesburg is going out with a bang for its season finale before the winter break. On Friday, 13th June R&B lovers are invited to La Parada in Rosebank for a special celebration honoring the 20th anniversary of Mariah Carey’s iconic album, The Emancipation of Mimi.
Presented in partnership with Universal Music Group South Africa, the evening promises a nostalgic yet elevated vibe, themed “We Belong Together”—a fitting tribute to one of Mimi’s most beloved ballads.
Guests will enjoy a full night of R&B excellence with tracks not only from Mariah, including classics like “It’s Like That” and “Shake It Off,” but also hits from modern icons like SZA, Chris Brown, Mary J. Blige, Jhene Aiko, and Beyoncé.
Africa’s top R&B DJ, Akio, will be on deck duties alongside special guests, while surprise hosts will add a touch of flair to the evening. The event will also offer dinner service, making it a full night of music, food, and vibes.
As part of this tribute, three talented South African artists—Lordkez, Rowlene, and Mia—have reimagined selections from The Emancipation of Mimi, showcasing the album’s lasting legacy through fresh local voices.
This Johannesburg edition follows the Cape Town “It’s Like That” masquerade party on June 6th, closing the season with two unforgettable tributes to an album that reshaped R&B.
