On Wednesday, 26 February 2026, chiesa di PAZZO LUPi invites audiences into a deeply resonant musical experience with Echoes of Marabi, a contemporary jazz project that honours South Africa’s early musical traditions while boldly reimagining them for the present.
Set in the heart of Melville, chiesa di PAZZO LUPi is an intimate event and cultural space known for its carefully curated 90-minute live music performances. Recently nominated Best Jazz Venue/Club by the Mzantsi Jazz Awards, the venue has become a respected home for boundary-pushing jazz and meaningful artistic exchange. About the Event
Echoes of Marabi brings together a powerful collective of voices and instruments to revisit the pulse and spirit of early South African music. Central to the project are The Marabi Sisters, also known as The Soultee Sisters — Busisiwe Shongwe, Nompulelelo Gugu Khubeka and Happiness Siyoko — whose rich vocal harmonies form the emotional core of the ensemble.
They are joined by acclaimed pianist Yonela Mnana and Swiss saxophonist Benedikt Reising, whose sensitive, expressive playing bridges tradition and innovation. Together, the group reimagines Marabi-era sounds through a contemporary jazz lens, creating music that feels both ancestral and strikingly modern.
The album’s expansive compositions move fluidly between prayer-like meditations, expressive improvisation and energetic ensemble passages. Each performance unfolds as a shared journey, showcasing a collective sound that is grounded in heritage while confidently forward-looking.
