Johannesburg Is Ready: Red Bull Half Court Brings South Africa’s Streetball Battle to Soweto
22 August @ 12:00 pm – 5:00 pm
The national champions will be crowned in Johannesburg, with two teams earning the right to represent South Africa at the Red Bull Half Court World Final in Manila.

The road to Manila is officially running through Soweto.
On Saturday, 22 August, Red Bull Half Court South Africa brings the country’s top 3×3 streetball talent together at Klipspruit Sports Centre for a national showdown where every bucket, possession and defensive stop could make the difference between going home and going global.
Following three city qualifiers across South Africa, the country’s qualifying men’s and women’s teams will battle for the national titles and two coveted places at the Red Bull Half Court World Final in Manila, Philippines, on 5 December 2026.
Soweto Gets the Full Streetball Treatment
Klipspruit Sports Centre becomes the meeting point for basketball, music and urban culture as the National Final takes over Soweto.
Doors open at 10:00, with the event running through the day and spectators aged 18 and over invited to experience the action live. Entry is free via RSVP.
But this isn’t simply a day of basketball. The programme brings together competitive 3×3 action, music, shooting challenges, a public dunk contest, and a 1v1 side competition, creating an environment where spectators aren’t just watching the culture; they’re part of it. And yes, Kamo Mphela is performing live.
The Champions Are Coming for the Crown
The men’s competition has a familiar name at the top of the conversation. MBB Blue Soldiers, the reigning 2025 national champions, return to defend their title after representing South Africa at last year’s World Final in Dubai. They’ll have to get through a strong field if they want another shot at the global stage. Joining them are Bucket Boys, Cape Town New Masters, Cape Town Thunder, Elite Pace Academy, Fantastic 4, LXG, Seal Team 6, Spartans and Tala Hady. With teams arriving from Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban, this is effectively a national streetball collision, and only one men’s team will leave with the ticket to Manila.
A New Women’s Champion Is Guaranteed
The women’s competition has an immediate twist: defending champions Hoop Hustlers are not in this year’s field. That means Johannesburg will crown a completely new women’s champion. The contenders include Blue Flames, Buckets & Bruises, Ghiv Us, Size Nenye and The Takeover, representing Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg. For these teams, the opportunity is bigger than a national title. Win in Soweto, and Manila becomes the next destination.
Every Possession Counts
Red Bull Half Court is built around pressure. Games are played three-on-three on a half-court, with matches running for 10 minutes or until a team reaches 21 points, whichever happens first.
But here’s where things get interesting. The competition’s “Own the Court” bonus can give an additional team in each group a route into the next round based on the highest number of points scored across its games, regardless of whether those games were wins or losses.
Translation? You don’t stop fighting because you’re behind. Every basket matters. Every possession can shift the standings. And even a game that looks lost can still influence who advances. That’s the kind of format that keeps the pressure on from the first whistle to the final buzzer.
More Than Basketball
The National Final is designed as a full streetball experience, with several opportunities for fans to get involved. Kamo Mphela Live will bring the music and energy, while Red Bull Run The Racks with Lethal Shooter challenges spectators to test their shooting ability. There’s also an open dunk contest, allowing players and spectators to step onto the court and throw down. And for players whose teams don’t make the knockout rounds, a 1v1 side competition keeps the competitive energy alive.
So whether you’re there for the basketball, the music, the competition or simply the atmosphere, there is plenty happening around the court.
The Road to Manila
At the end of the day, however, two teams will matter most. The men’s and women’s champions crowned in Soweto on 22 August will earn the right to represent South Africa at the Red Bull Half Court World Final in Manila on 5 December, where they’ll face national champions from around the world. Johannesburg is therefore more than the location of the final. It’s the launchpad.
