South Africa’s Charming Penguins Take Centre Stage in Discovery Channel Series
South Africa’s iconic African penguins are stepping into the spotlight with the launch of Meet the Penguins, a heartwarming new eight-part series premiering on Saturday, 4 July at 21:55 on Discovery Channel (DStv Channel 121).
Filmed at the renowned SANCCOB (Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds) facility in Cape Town, the series gives viewers an intimate look at the dedicated conservationists working tirelessly to rescue, rehabilitate and release one of the country’s most treasured yet critically endangered species.
Each year, SANCCOB cares for around 2,000 African penguins, providing life-saving treatment to injured, orphaned and abandoned birds before returning them to the wild whenever possible. Meet the Penguins follows the emotional journeys of these remarkable birds while introducing audiences to the passionate team behind their recovery.
The series captures every stage of the rehabilitation process—from hand-rearing vulnerable chicks and teaching young penguins how to swim to cleaning oil-covered feathers and treating injuries caused by predators. These inspiring stories highlight the extraordinary bond between the penguins and the people committed to giving them a second chance at survival.
The African penguin, found only along the coastlines of South Africa and Namibia, now faces an uncertain future. On 24 October 2024, the species was officially uplisted to Critically Endangered after wild populations dropped below 10,000 breeding pairs. Today, scientists estimate that only around 8,300 breeding pairs remain and warn that, without urgent conservation efforts, the species could become functionally extinct in the wild by 2035.
