Lawrence Maleka Stars in Mzansi Magic’s Critical But Stable

Mzansi Magic is set to captivate viewers with its upcoming drama series, Critical But Stable, a gripping adaptation of acclaimed novelist Angela Makholwa’s bestselling book. The 13-episode series premieres on Sunday, 26 July 2026, airing every Sunday at 20:00 on Channel 161.

At the heart of the story is Duke, a struggling businessman who persuades his closest friends to participate in an insurance scam as he battles to save both his failing business and his ailing wife. What begins as an act of desperation quickly spirals into a series of life-altering consequences.

For Lawrence Maleka, taking on the role of Mzi presented an exciting challenge. The actor and television host revealed that the opportunity to portray a character unlike any he had played before was one of the biggest reasons he joined the production.

“I was interested because it was different. Mzi has a lot going on beneath the surface and I enjoyed unpacking those layers. The more I read, the more curious I became about him.”

Maleka said

Maleka believes audiences will connect with the series because of its realism.

“These are ordinary people who make one decision and then have to live with the consequences. You can understand how these characters got themselves into these situations, even when you don’t agree with their choices,”.

he explained

The actor also highlighted the universal theme of responsibility that runs through Mzi’s journey. While the pressures may differ from person to person, the desire to provide for loved ones is something many viewers will recognise.

Eve Rasimeni

To prepare for the role, Maleka immersed himself in understanding Mzi beyond what was written on the page. He spoke to different people, listened to varying perspectives and explored the emotional realities of his character’s struggles.

Thabo Malema

Having direct access to Angela Makholwa also proved invaluable.

“Those conversations definitely helped shape my approach to Mzi,”.

Reflecting on the production experience, Maleka described the people he worked with as the biggest highlight.

“We had a great cast and crew, and those are the projects you remember. Being surrounded by talented people who care about the work made the experience enjoyable from start to finish.”

With its compelling storyline, layered characters and powerful performances, Critical But Stable promises to be one of Mzansi Magic’s must-watch dramas of 2026.
