Altruist Dermatologist Sunscreen Launches in South Africa

Altruist, the globally respected dermatologist-led sunscreen brand, has officially launched in South Africa this month through an exclusive retail partnership with Clicks. Created by UK-based consultant dermatologist and skin cancer specialist Dr Andrew Birnie, Altruist is on a clear mission: to reduce the incidence of skin cancer by making high-quality sunscreen affordable and accessible to everyone.

Since its debut in the UK in 2015, Altruist has steadily expanded its international footprint. Its arrival in South Africa marks a significant milestone for the brand, bringing its sun-protection–focused philosophy to both online and in-store shoppers nationwide.

Altruist Products Available in South Africa

The South African launch includes five carefully formulated SKUs:

  • Altruist SPF 50 (100ml)
  • Altruist SPF 30 (200ml)
  • Altruist Face Fluid SPF 50 (50ml)
  • Altruist Family Sunspray SPF 50 (250ml)
  • Altruist Invisible Spray SPF 50 (200ml)

All Altruist products deliver market-leading, 5-star UVA protection, exceeding standard European requirements. They are hypoallergenic, non-comedogenic, fragrance-free, paraben-free, water-resistant, and suitable for all skin types and tones. Each formula is designed with a non-sticky, comfortable feel to encourage regular and generous application.

A Brand Rooted in South Africa

Altruist’s story has deep ties to South Africa. Dr Birnie, who is married to a South African, has travelled to the country regularly for over 20 years. During this time, he played a pivotal role in advancing dermatological education and care, helping to organise the South African Society of Dermatology’s first conference and surgical workshop, and contributing to the establishment of the South African Society for Dermatologic Surgery (SASDS).

He also spent extensive time working in KwaZulu-Natal, running teaching clinics at Albert Luthuli Hospital and leading outreach programmes for communities unable to access or afford dermatological care. These experiences reinforced his belief that effective sun protection should never be a luxury.

It was in South Africa that Dr Birnie met skincare economist David Westerbeek van Eerten, whose shared vision helped turn the idea of Altruist into reality. Their collaboration combined medical expertise with industry insight, giving birth to a sunscreen brand built on impact, not profit alone.

Making Sun Protection a Basic Right

“Cost should never be a factor when deciding whether or not to wear proper sunscreen, or how much or how often to apply it. Everyone should have the right to take the necessary precautions to reduce their risk of skin cancer. Many sunscreens are so expensive that people use too little or too infrequently. Altruist is making a stand against this.”

says Dr Birnie

In line with its mission, Altruist donates to skin cancer charities with every sale, reinforcing its commitment to prevention, education, and long-term impact.

South Africans can now explore and purchase the full Altruist Dermatologist Sunscreen range exclusively at Clicks, both online and in-store, making expert-level sun protection more accessible than ever.
