Isigqi Album Launch
Sibusiso “Mash” Mashiloane Announces Release of Eighth Album Isigqi
1 June 2025 @ 1:00 pm – 8:00 pm
Acclaimed South African pianist, composer, and scholar Sibusiso “Mash” Mashiloane is poised to release his much-anticipated eighth album, Isigqi, on 30 May 2025 across all major digital platforms. This release will be celebrated with a special live launch concert on 1 June 2025 at The Chairman in Durban, featuring an ensemble of prominent South African musicians.
Isigqi: A Rhythmic Tribute to Heritage and Home
Isigqi — meaning “the beat” in isiZulu — is a heartfelt homage to township rhythms, intergenerational wisdom, and the enduring spirit of community. The album is a sonic reflection of Mashiloane’s personal and professional evolution, deeply inspired by mentors, cultural custodians, and the rich heritage of South African jazz.

The project was recorded live at the iconic bird’s eye jazz club in Basel, Switzerland, during Mashiloane’s 2024 residency supported by Pro Helvetia. For the session, he collaborated with a Swiss ensemble, infusing his African-rooted compositions with a global jazz sensibility.
A Night of Sonic Storytelling in Durban
The Isigqi launch event at The Chairman will feature a powerhouse line-up, including:
- Dalisu Ndlazi (bass)
- Riley Giandhari (drums)
- Siyalo Zulu (trombone)
Audiences can expect an immersive evening guided by African philosophies of Ubuntu, where emotion, rhythm, and memory converge in Mashiloane’s signature sound.

A Doctorate and a Milestone
Adding to this celebratory moment, May 2025 also marks Mashiloane’s doctoral graduation from the University of KwaZulu-Natal. His academic work explored the formation of a local jazz identity, highlighting how South African musicians channel their cultural heritage through jazz as a medium.
“Isigqi is a culmination of many things: my personal journey, my academic reflections, and my tribute to those who walked before me. It’s about recognising how music carries memory, identity, and connection.”
UKZN praised his doctoral recitals and thesis as “musical awakenings,” where jazz becomes a language deeply rooted in local expression, shaped by accent, dialect, and lived experience.
Reinforcing a South African Jazz Identity
Having already secured multiple awards and critical acclaim, Isigqi solidifies Mashiloane’s role as a leading voice in the evolution of South African jazz — one deeply rooted in ancestral memory, community, and rhythmic complexity.
Stay tuned to Isigqi — where rhythm becomes a bridge between generations, and jazz speaks in the language of home.
