Zizipho Buti: Soft Life is My Most Challenging Yet Rewarding Role

Zizipho Buti, known for her work in Nkululeko and Generations: The Legacy, takes on her most demanding role yet in the new Showmax Original series, Soft Life. Buti plays Owami Gqoji, a woman from Tembisa forced to enter the world of high-society companionship to pay off her mother’s escalating medical bills. The series delves into themes of desperation, secrecy, and resilience as Owami struggles to maintain her sense of self amidst the allure and danger of the “soft life.”

Created by Vusi Zion for Afriprime and produced by Urban Brew Studios, Soft Life is directed by SAFTA winners Nozipho Nkelemba (Gomora, Umakoti Wethu) and Nthabiseng Mokoena (Law, Love and Betrayal, The Wife). The cast features a stellar lineup, including Katlego Lebogang (Spinners, Yoh! Christmas), Mampho Brescia (Isibaya), Ayanda Daweti (Scandal!, Gomora), and African Movie Academy Awards nominee Chumani Pan (Igazi, Inkabi and Ashes to Ashes).

In an exclusive interview with Zibuyile Dladla, Buti opens up about her transformative experience playing Owami, her personal connection to the character, and the societal pressures reflected in the show.

A Lesson in Society’s Obsession With the “Soft Life”

For Buti, Soft Life shines a light on the immense pressures individuals face in pursuit of financial stability and social status.

“Owami’s story highlights the immense pressures many people face—be it financial struggles or family burdens—that can push them into compromising situations. It’s a reality that’s both heartbreaking and worth discussing more openly as a society.”

Connecting With Owami’s Journey

Buti found a deeply personal connection with Owami’s story, particularly through their shared experiences with father-daughter relationships. While Owami never had a relationship with her father, Buti reflected on her own upbringing and her late father’s efforts to support her, despite complicated family circumstances.

“The parallels between our father-daughter dynamics were striking, and they helped me connect with Owami on a deeper level,”.

Collaborating With Award-Winning Directors

Buti praises directors Nozipho Nkelemba and Nthabiseng Mokoena for their skill and supportive leadership on set.

“They created a safe environment for me to explore Owami’s character. Their guidance was invaluable, especially in helping me tap into a younger version of myself to truly embody her. I’d be honoured to work with them again—they’re phenomenal directors.”

The Most Challenging Role Yet

Describing Owami as her most challenging role to date, Buti reflects on the emotional toll of portraying such a complex character.

“Owami stretched me as a performer in ways I hadn’t anticipated. She’s highly emotional, which is the opposite of who I am in real life. Tapping into her pain and resilience was exhausting but deeply rewarding. I remember coming home from set feeling so drained from all of Owami’s crying, but it was a good challenge.”

Words of Wisdom for Those Facing Similar Struggles

“Stay true to yourself and never compromise your values or peace of mind for temporary gains. The choices we make should allow us to sleep at night, knowing we’ve preserved our integrity. Peace of mind is far more valuable than chasing a fleeting lifestyle.”

For young people navigating challenges like Owami’s, Buti offers heartfelt advice:

She hopes the series serves as a cautionary tale about the allure of quick fixes and the strength found in perseverance.

“Life’s challenges can be overwhelming, but it’s okay to work hard and take the longer, more ethical path to achieve your goals.”

Soft Life: A Bold and Thought-Provoking Drama

With its compelling narrative, Soft Life promises to spark important conversations about societal pressures, resilience, and the true cost of the “soft life.” The first three episodes are now streaming on Showmax, with Buti delivering a career-defining performance that is both challenging and inspiring.
