On 22 July, Sandton became a front-row seat to Samsung’s next chapter in mobile technology as Urban Lifestyle joined the Galaxy Unpacked experience at Nelson Mandela Square.
But beyond the shiny hardware and headline specifications, Samsung’s latest Galaxy Z generation points to a bigger shift: technology is becoming less about making devices smarter and more about making them understand how we actually live.
For a young, connected South African audience juggling work, creativity, entertainment and life on the move, that distinction matters.
AI That Fits Into Real Life
Samsung’s central argument is simple: AI does not necessarily need to outthink people. It needs to understand them.

The company is positioning Galaxy AI as something that works increasingly in the background, connecting information across smartphones, watches, tablets, TVs and smart-home devices.
Imagine your watch picking up on your sleep patterns, your phone helping organise your day and your connected devices responding to your routines.
The ambition is an ecosystem where technology feels less like another task to manage and more like an assistant that understands context.
That also raises an important question for South Africa: how much personalisation are we comfortable giving technology in exchange for convenience?
Samsung says trust must remain at the centre of that relationship, with its Knox security platform designed to protect data across connected Galaxy devices.
Foldables Get More Serious
The hardware story is just as ambitious.
Samsung is introducing its next-generation foldables with the new Flex Titanium display technology, designed to make flexible screens stronger, slimmer and less visibly creased.

The technology combines a titanium-alloy film with a titanium plate, addressing one of the biggest challenges facing foldable displays: balancing flexibility with durability.
The result is intended to deliver a more refined screen experience without sacrificing portability.
It is a reminder that the evolution of foldables isn’t simply about creating phones that bend. It is about making the format practical enough to become part of everyday life.
A Galaxy For Different Ways Of Living
The new Galaxy Z line-up reflects that philosophy.
The Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra sits at the premium end, featuring an expansive 8-inch main display and positioning itself as a mobile productivity powerhouse.
The Galaxy Z Fold8 focuses on moving between everyday smartphone interactions and larger-screen immersion, while the Galaxy Z Flip8 continues to lean into self-expression, convenience and compact design.

In South Africa, recommended retail prices range from R26,999 for the Galaxy Z Flip8 256GB to R60,999 for the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra 1TB.
That makes the new generation firmly premium, but Samsung is clearly betting that different users will see different value in the foldable proposition.
The Bigger Picture
What stood out at Galaxy Unpacked wasn’t simply another smartphone launch.
It was a glimpse at where consumer technology is heading: devices that adapt around people rather than forcing people to adapt around devices.
For South Africa‘s increasingly digital urban generation, the real test will be whether this vision translates into meaningful everyday experiences.
Because the future of technology isn’t just about what a device can do.
It’s about how naturally it fits into the way we live.
