From Embo to Miami: Local Film Treasure Hunt Heads to International Stage

It’s not every day that a film created in the heart of a township makes it onto the global stage—but Treasure Hunt, the debut feature from CAP Studios, has done exactly that. Filmed in Embo, a small township nestled in the Valley of a Thousand Hills in KwaZulu-Natal, this powerful homegrown story is set to premiere at the 2025 American Black Film Festival (ABFF) in Miami Beach, Florida.

Written and directed by Chim Onyebilanma and brought to life through the lens of international cinematographer Isaac Alongi, Treasure Hunt tells the gripping tale of a reformed ex-convict who discovers a stash of jewellery in a bin—only to find himself pursued by dangerous criminals. But beneath the surface of its crime-thriller plot lies a deeper message: one of redemption, difficult choices, and second chances.

“This film was born from a desire to tell stories that matter, from places people don’t usually look. This is the studio’s first feature film, and we’re proud to show what’s possible when a community comes together and believes in something bigger.”

says Chim, who also founded CAP Studios

That community effort is evident in every frame. Locals from Embo donated their homes, vehicles, and time to support the film’s creation. A star-studded South African cast—including Moopi Mothibeli, Muzi Mthabela, Trevor Gumbi, Zane Meas, and Samukele Mkhezie—joined the project without hesitation, united by the vision of telling an authentic and resonant story.

Treasure Hunt is about making the right decisions, even when it’s hard. And I believe people are going to love it.”

says veteran actor Zane Meas

The film will make its international debut on Saturday, 14 June 2025 at 8:15 PM at the Miami Beach Convention Center, as part of the ABFF—one of the most prestigious film festivals dedicated to celebrating Black talent worldwide and recognised as a gateway to the Oscars.

Executive producers Frances Dlongolo, Kike Adeniyi, and Chim Onyebilanma have created a blueprint for what’s possible when homegrown stories are nurtured with passion and purpose. Treasure Hunt is not just a milestone for CAP Studios—it’s a moment for South African cinema.

With its first international nod, CAP Studios is already gearing up for its next production. And if Treasure Hunt is any indication, this is just the beginning.
