UPZ Revives Mzansi Classic ‘Pure Surprise’ with Amapiano Rework
A beloved staple of South African house music culture is getting a fresh groove in 2025. UPZ has reimagined his iconic 2007 hit Pure Surprise (feat. DKP) as a smooth, soulful amapiano track—introducing the anthem to a whole new generation while paying tribute to its enduring legacy.

Originally released via soWHAT Records and later licensed by Soul Candi in 2009, Pure Surprise soared to chart-topping success and became a singalong favorite in clubs, township grooves, and radio stations across Mzansi. The track’s catchy chorus and house rhythm made it a staple at house-themed events, where it’s been remixed, covered, and sampled over the years.
“In 2021, Khanyisa and MFR Souls dropped tracks—Bheka Mina Ngedwa and Sthandwa Sami—that both interpolated the Pure Surprise chorus melody. Khanyisa’s track blew up and really marked the start of her career. That’s when I realized that a proper amapiano version of Pure Surprise could truly resonate today.”
Speaking about his motivation to release an amapiano version, UPZ shared,
Taking the project into his own hands under his Afrofusion alias Fynite, UPZ has crafted a private school amapiano version of the song—an elegant and understated subgenre that emphasizes musicality. The new version retains the heart and soul of the original, incorporating amapiano’s signature drum patterns and subtle log drums, but swaps out the rap verse for a sophisticated, jazz-inflected guitar solo by Durban-based guitarist and producer Kenton Lee.
“Back in 2011/12, we were part of the test crew for Big Brother House. After a wild night, we were woken up to this classic. I couldn’t believe I hadn’t known it before, but it’s been a favorite ever since! Fast forward to 2025, and I’m honored to add my guitar to this banging remake!”
Lee, who’s worked with Mörda and other prominent local artists, shared a heartfelt message on Instagram:

While UPZ originally hoped to collaborate with private school amapiano pioneer Kelvin Momo, scheduling conflicts led him to complete the rework independently.
“I’m a huge fan of Kelvin Momo’s vibe. But it was also rewarding to dive in solo and still preserve the spirit of the original.”
