Sprite Joins Forces with Karabo Poppy to Revamp Braamfontein’s Social Hotspot

A Creative Fusion of Art, Music, and Culture

Sprite has once again raised the bar by unveiling a stunning mural in Braamfontein, Johannesburg, as part of Sprite Limelight Season 3. This time, the brand teamed up with Karabo Poppy, one of Africa’s most celebrated artists, to transform the facade of Cheeky’s on Bree Street into a vibrant homage to hip-hop culture, creativity, and resilience.

Coinciding with the highly anticipated launch of Blxckie’s new single, “South,” the mural is more than just a visual masterpiece—it’s a storytelling canvas that reflects Blxckie’s rise from Durban to global fame. Sprite’s ongoing commitment to amplifying creative voices shines through, turning Braamfontein’s social hotspot into a must-visit cultural landmark.

A Cultural Landmark in Braamfontein

Braamfontein is renowned for its dynamic energy, making it the perfect setting for Sprite’s latest artistic initiative. With its deep roots in youth culture, fashion, and music, the area has long been a hub for Gen Z creatives and trendsetters. The new mural at Cheeky’s adds to Braam’s vibrant aesthetic, solidifying its reputation as a cultural epicenter.

The unveiling event was electric, as hip-hop fans gathered to celebrate Blxckie’s single launch, which was hailed as one of the biggest hip-hop releases of the year. The fusion of art, music, and community spirit made the moment unforgettable, setting the stage for a new era of creative collaboration.

Karabo Poppy’s Storytelling Through Art

Karabo Poppy is known for her bold, contemporary designs that capture the essence of South African identity. Her latest work for Sprite is no exception. The mural doesn’t just depict Blxckie’s journey—it invites viewers to decode symbolic elements woven into the artwork.

Each section of the mural holds hidden gems from Blxckie’s life, representing the obstacles he has overcome and the milestones he has reached. The intricate details encourage fans to engage with the piece on a deeper level, creating a connection between the art, the artist, and the audience.

“Heat Happens, Stay Cool”—Blxckie’s Journey to the Top

The collaboration aligns with Sprite’s global brand message: “Heat Happens, Stay Cool.” Blxckie’s story is one of resilience—navigating challenges, pushing boundaries, and betting on himself despite the odds.

Sprite Limelight has provided a platform for artists like Blxckie to step into the global spotlight, and this mural is a reflection of his unwavering self-belief.

“This mural is a celebration of resilience, creativity, and the power of self-belief. Karabo Poppy has beautifully captured Blxckie’s inspiring journey, and we hope it motivates others to believe in their own potential and stay cool when heat happens.”

Speaking on the initiative, Franscoe Bouwer, Senior Marketing Director for South Africa at Coca-Cola Africa, shared:

Karabo Poppy on Creativity, Challenges, and Advice for Young Artists

What drew you to this Sprite campaign?

“Sprite’s commitment to investing in African creativity caught my attention immediately. Seeing such a global brand support young South African artists made my ‘yes’ that much easier. Plus, Sprite has always been my favorite soft drink!”

What was your creative process for the mural?

“This was a unique challenge because the building has many windows, unlike the flat surfaces I usually work on. I had to think differently and create a narrative using individual illustrations rather than one solid image. It pushed my creativity in a new direction, which I really enjoyed.”

How does it feel to leave your mark in Braamfontein?

“It’s an incredible honor. Braam is one of the most vibrant creative hubs in South Africa, and the potential for globally impactful art here is huge. Having my work on such a large scale in this space is a dream come true.”

Any advice for young creatives?

“Celebrate your unique voice. Inspiration is great, but originality is where your true power lies. Ignore trends and focus on crafting something the world hasn’t seen before.”

A Lasting Impact

Sprite’s collaboration with Karabo Poppy and Blxckie is more than just an art installation—it’s a cultural statement. The mural is a testament to creative expression, perseverance, and the power of self-belief, reinforcing Braamfontein’s status as a thriving creative hub.

For those in Johannesburg, visiting Cheeky’s on Bree Street is now a must—not just for the social scene, but to witness a piece of history in the making.
