Nambitha Ben-Mazwi Returns in Empini Season 2 as Ndoni Themba

Nambitha Ben-Mazwi is back in Empini Season 2, reprising her role as Ndoni Themba, a troubled private security bodyguard determined to uncover the truth about her father’s death. Her powerful performance in the first season earned her the Best Actress award at the 2024 National Film and Television Awards. With the highly anticipated new season premiering today on Showmax, she sits down with Zibuyile Dladla to discuss the role, its challenges, and the journey ahead.

Not the Most Demanding, But the Most Enriching

While playing Ndoni required deep emotional investment, Nambitha doesn’t consider it her most demanding role.

“I actually hoped for more fights, stunts, and physicality. We went through a lot as a cast and crew, which brought us closer.”

she admits. However, Empini has been a transformative experience, teaching her leadership, resilience, and teamwork

Advice to Ndoni: Heal and Trust Yourself

If she could meet Ndoni in a parallel universe, Nambitha would tell her to heal her inner child.

“What happened wasn’t her fault. She’s been gaslit her whole life, internalizing trauma that shaped her. I’d tell her to trust herself, let go of defensiveness, and embrace healing without seeking validation.”

De-Roling: Finding Peace After Intensity

To separate herself from intense roles, Nambitha prioritizes mental well-being.

“I take trips to the bush or an island, where I snorkel and reconnect with myself. My faith re-centers me, and therapy is a must in this industry.”

Ndoni’s Journey in Season 2

This season explores Ndoni’s dedication to her VIP bodyguard team, her complex relationship with her mother, and a turbulent romance with Zenzele.

“Their relationship is messy but real. They force each other to confront their traumas, and whether they overcome them remains to be seen.”

Challenges, Rewards, and Camaraderie

One of the most challenging moments? The finale.

“It was a culmination of everything—personal challenges, an injury, and six months of back rehab. I did many stunts through pain, but it was all worth it.”

Despite the hardships, the bond on set was unforgettable.

“Sandile Mahlangu, Amahle Khumalo, and Charmaine Mtinta made it special. The camaraderie was unmatched.”

Future Aspirations: Action and Comedy

If Empini continues, Nambitha hopes for more action, seeing Ndoni evolve emotionally while embracing her father’s legacy. As for her dream role?

“Comedy! I miss it and think I’m pretty funny. I’d love a role that highlights my comedic timing—or even my singing.”
