Birkenstock marked its monumental 250th anniversary in style with the launch of its Art & Sole Concept Store at 44 on Stanley in Johannesburg. This space isn’t just a pop-up; it’s an artistic tribute to Birkenstock’s legacy, combining its rich shoemaking tradition with South Africa’s vibrant creativity.

The Art & Sole store is a 280-square-metre experiential haven, designed with a double-volume ceiling and rooted in the materials that make Birkenstock iconic: cork, leather, jute, and metal. Entering the store feels like stepping into the brand’s history and vision, enhanced by thoughtful storytelling and an array of curated local artistry.

A Blend of Heritage and Local Art

The collaboration with South African artists and designers like Mpho Vackier, Naledi Modupi, and Mandla Thabethe gave the space an unmistakably local character. From Vackier’s functional yet symbolic African-inspired furniture to Modupi’s beautifully illustrated custom shoe box sleeves, every detail in the store celebrates both the global heritage of Birkenstock and South African culture.

Mandla Thabethe, founder of Project Inflamed, showcased stunning Soweto-born designs paired with Birkenstock footwear at the launch, merging contemporary fashion with timeless comfort.

Immersive Experiences

The store’s Hourglass Exhibition takes visitors on a journey through Birkenstock’s evolution, from its first orthopaedic shoe to its iconic modern-day designs. The Walk This Way installation by Henry Leutwyler, a global traveling art piece, further underscores the brand’s commitment to craftsmanship and legacy.

A customization station allows customers to personalize their Birkenstock shoes with laser engraving, while other highlights include exclusive sticker packs, limited-edition shoppers, and beautifully branded cotton shoe bags.

Elevated Comfort Meets Local Flavor

Visitors were treated to Fair Trade African coffee from Bean There Coffee Company, an in-store coffee station adding a cozy touch to the experience.

Birkenstock’s tagline, “Put your foot in it, you’ll know,” encapsulates the event’s ethos: an invitation to indulge in the brand’s unparalleled comfort, style, and legacy.

A Legacy Worth Celebrating

The Art & Sole Concept Store is a reminder of why Birkenstock has remained a global icon for 250 years. From its orthopaedic roots to its commitment to sustainability and comfort, the brand continues to reinvent itself while staying true to its ethos.

While the store at 44 on Stanley is temporary, we can’t help but wish it could become a permanent fixture, evolving with each new campaign and offering fresh experiences every time.

Don’t miss the chance to immerse yourself in Birkenstock’s world at 44 on Stanley before the concept store closes on 16 December 2024.
