Johannesburg audiences are getting a chance to experience two very different sides of contemporary Saudi cinema this October, as Saudi Film Nights heads to the Lesedi Theatre at Joburg Theatre in Braamfontein.
The Johannesburg programme kicks off on 8 October with Night Courier before continuing with Irtizaz on 9 October, offering audiences stories that move between social pressure, financial struggle, family expectations and the realities of everyday life.
When the Hustle Takes a Dark Turn
Night Courier centres on Fahad, a struggling delivery driver navigating Riyadh’s streets during the night shift.
What begins as a familiar hustle for someone trying to make ends meet takes a darker turn when his desperation for money pulls him into a dangerous illicit world.
The film offers an intimate look at the pressures that can sit behind the gig economy — where earning a living can sometimes mean making choices with consequences far beyond the next payday.
A Funeral, Family Pressure and Social Expectations
On 9 October, Irtizaz shifts the mood with a sharper and more playful exploration of relationships and social expectations.
The story follows a young divorcee attending a funeral, only to find herself caught in an uncomfortable situation when her mother pushes her into a contest for approval.
Through humour and awkward social dynamics, the film explores the expectations placed on women, marriage and family — themes that can resonate across cultures, even when the circumstances look very different.
Together, Night Courier and Irtizaz give Johannesburg audiences a glimpse into the range of stories emerging from contemporary Saudi cinema, moving beyond headlines to focus on people, relationships and the everyday pressures that shape their lives.
