Cape Town to Shine with Africa’s First Festival of Light
9 April – 12 April
Cape Town to Shine with Africa’s First Festival of Light
Cape Town is set to glow brighter than ever in April 2026 as it welcomes LUMENOCITY – The Art of Light, Africa’s first major festival dedicated entirely to light-based art, immersive technology, and creative storytelling. From 9–12 April 2026, the historic Company’s Garden will be transformed into a radiant playground of colour, imagination, and innovation.
Designed and produced exclusively by South African creatives, including renowned Cape Town illustrator and multidisciplinary artist Yay Abe, LUMENOCITY showcases the strength, depth, and originality of the country’s artistic community. The event offers locals and visitors a completely new cultural experience in the heart of the Mother City.
Timed strategically alongside the Two Oceans Marathon, the festival is expected to draw thousands of families, tourists, runners, art enthusiasts, and culture seekers eager to explore a new dimension of Cape Town’s creative scene.
An Immersive Journey of Light and Art
At the core of LUMENOCITY is a carefully curated pathway featuring more than 20 large-scale installations and interactive artworks, each designed to inspire play and exploration. Highlights include:
- Projection mapping across the Museum and National Gallery by Yay Abe
- A 10-metre signature light tower, housing a 5x5m LED “cave” that visitors can step inside for an unforgettable visual immersion
- The Beam of Hope, launching in early April, casting a powerful column of light across Cape Town’s skyline throughout the festival
“LUMENOCITY is about igniting wonder — that electric moment when imagination feels real. We want every visitor to leave with a sense of possibility, reminded that creativity isn’t just art on display, but a future Cape Town can shape and lead.”
says Gareth Hadden, Founder and Creative Producer of the festival
A Festival After Dark
From sunset until late into the night, the Company’s Garden will become a glowing landscape of illuminated trees, vibrant pathways, ambient performances, and installations that react to sound, touch, and movement. Food trucks, family zones, and relaxation areas will enhance the experience, making it accessible and enjoyable for all ages.
Growing Cape Town’s Creative Future
Beyond its visual spectacle, LUMENOCITY is built on a broader mission to support the creative economy. The festival aims to:
- Generate job opportunities
- Boost tourism during a key weekend in the city
- Provide platforms and mentorship for emerging artists
- Promote Cape Town as a global creative destination
A Bold Vision for the Next Five Years
LUMENOCITY is only at the beginning of its journey. The festival is guided by a five-year plan that includes expanding its footprint across the Gardens, introducing light trails throughout the city, activating iconic landmarks, and ultimately aiming for an extraordinary projection-mapping display on Table Mountain — a world-first celebration of African artistry.
“Cape Town is a city shaped by light — from its mountains and oceans to its people and stories. LUMENOCITY celebrates that light and amplifies it,”.
adds Gareth Hadden
As April 2026 approaches, Cape Town prepares to step into the spotlight — glowing, vibrant, and ready to shine like never before.
