South Africa’s creator economy is having a serious main-character moment.
On Tuesday, 12 August, Urban Lifestyle joined creators, brands, media and industry players at The Tryst in Kramerville, Sandton, for the launch and nominee announcement of the 2026 Content Creator Awards.
But this wasn’t simply another awards announcement. The room reflected how dramatically the creator landscape has changed since the awards launched in 2022.
Back then, creators were still fighting to prove that making content could be a legitimate career. Today, they are building businesses, influencing buying decisions, launching shows, shaping trends and becoming some of the most recognisable voices in South African culture.

From Content Creators to Cultural Architects
The 2026 nominees demonstrate just how wide the creator economy has become.
With 20 categories, the awards recognise talent across comedy, podcasts, dance, fashion, music, automotive content, online series, brand collaborations, expert commentary and social storytelling.
The public voting categories feature major names including Donovan Goliath, Grace Mondlana, Nadia Jaftha, Lasizwe, Noko Mashaba, Mpoomy Ledwaba and Vafa Naraghi, while the emerging categories shine a light on creators building their audiences and identities from the ground up.
That diversity matters.
South African digital culture isn’t being created from one template. It is being shaped by different communities, personalities, languages, interests and perspectives — often from bedrooms, studios, streets and smartphones.

Samsung Galaxy Enters the Creator Conversation
The biggest shift this year is Samsung Galaxy becoming the awards’ headline sponsor.
The partnership reflects something young creators already understand: technology has radically lowered the barriers to storytelling.
A smartphone can now be a camera, editing suite, production tool and publishing platform — all in one pocket.

Samsung Galaxy is taking that idea further with the new #CapturedWithGalaxy Award, which is open to creators across niches.
The winner will receive a Content Creator Award trophy and a Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 valued at approximately R40,999.
Entries close on 20 September 2026, giving creators one final opportunity to put their work in the spotlight.

Raising the Bar for South African Creators
Recognition is also becoming more sophisticated.
The 2026 awards have introduced more rigorous entry criteria, with judging guidelines developed in collaboration with IAB South Africa.
That is important in an industry where influence can no longer be measured by follower counts alone.
Originality, execution, storytelling, cultural relevance and the ability to create meaningful connections are becoming increasingly important markers of creator success.
The message from founder Manuela Dias de Deus is clear: the awards have moved beyond legitimising content creation. The focus is now on celebrating the people setting the standard for what comes next.

Sandton Is the Next Stop
The winners will be revealed at the 2026 Content Creator Awards gala on 17 October in Sandton, Johannesburg.
Hosted by 2022 winner Lesego Tlabi, better known as Coconut Kelz, the launch brought together one of the biggest industry gatherings in the programme’s history.
For South Africa‘s young digital generation, that momentum is bigger than an awards night.
It is proof that the creator economy has moved from the sidelines to the centre of culture — and the next generation is already creating what comes next.
