KLM Marks 106 Years with a Special Delft Blue House Honoring US Connection
KLM Celebrates 106 Years of Connection with the US with a Special Delft Blue House in the Heart of Leiden
KLM Royal Dutch Airlines is celebrating 106 years of aviation excellence and transatlantic connection by unveiling its latest Delft Blue miniature house — the former sexton’s residence, Villa Rameau, located beside the historic Pieterskerk in Leiden. This symbolic house marks another chapter in KLM’s tradition of honouring Dutch heritage while reflecting its enduring relationship with the United States.
106 Years of Transatlantic Ties: From Pilgrims to Partnership

The story of the Pilgrims, who lived in Leiden for twelve years before sailing to America on the Mayflower in 1620, forms the foundation of a lasting bond between the Netherlands and the US. KLM continues this legacy today as the world’s oldest airline still operating under its original name, connecting Europe and the US for over a century.

Through its Joint Venture with Delta Air Lines and as part of the Air France-KLM Group, KLM operates flights to fifteen US destinations, transporting millions of passengers annually and supporting economic growth and cultural exchange across both continents.
“With the unveiling of Villa Rameau as our 106th Delft Blue house, we’re not only celebrating our birthday, but also the importance of connection and resilience. These values are reflected in the story of the house and the Pilgrims, and they’re also at the heart of KLM. Especially in challenging times, this house reminds us how vital it is to stay connected.”
said Marjan Rintel, President & CEO of KLM
A Rich Leiden Legacy
Villa Rameau, now home to the Leiden American Pilgrim Museum, holds deep historical significance. The Pilgrims’ early harvest celebration in Leiden, inspired by the Relief of Leiden, evolved into what Americans now celebrate as Thanksgiving. Decades later, the Rameau family, who lived in the house, played a key role in the local resistance during World War II.

This site, rich in stories of perseverance and unity, embodies the same spirit KLM has carried throughout its 106-year journey — building connections, overcoming challenges, and fostering global community.
“It’s an honour that Villa Rameau, with its unique history and central place in Leiden, is now part of the KLM miniature house collection. This house tells an important part of Leiden’s story, from the Pilgrims to the resistance, and we’re proud to see it shared with the world.”
said Peter Heijkoop, Mayor of Leiden
Through the unveiling of its 106th Delft Blue house, KLM once again bridges history and modernity, celebrating not only its own milestone but also the enduring ties that have connected people across the Atlantic for centuries.
