Fleurhof Mall: Unlocking Economic Opportunities Between Soweto & Roodepoort
Last week’s sod-turning ceremony marked the official start of construction at Fleurhof Mall, a landmark development that promises to reshape the economic landscape between Soweto and Roodepoort. Spearheaded by Abcon Developments in partnership with the Masingita Group of Companies, the mall is positioned as a crucial economic connector between historically segregated communities while meeting the needs of a rapidly expanding urban population.
A Strategic Location Bridging Communities
Situated along Fleurhof Drive, a key commuter link completed in 2017, the mall’s location will directly connect Soweto with the western suburbs of Florida and Roodepoort. This positioning not only enhances accessibility but also ensures the centre draws foot traffic from both communities, encouraging local trade and integration.
Bryce O’Donnell, Managing Director of Abcon Developments, emphasized the significance of the project:
“The development signals a new phase in the economic transformation of Fleurhof, one of Johannesburg’s largest integrated housing developments. With over 9,000 housing units completed in the past decade and more underway, the demand for quality retail and business infrastructure is greater than ever.”
Driving Job Creation and Economic Growth
Construction of the 19,631m² mall will generate hundreds of temporary jobs over the next 12 months, with long-term employment opportunities across retail, management, and support services once the mall opens. Local hiring initiatives will prioritise residents of Fleurhof and surrounding areas, ensuring the project directly benefits its community.

Beyond jobs, Fleurhof Mall is designed to empower local entrepreneurs and small businesses. By offering access to a larger, diverse customer base, the mall creates new opportunities for growth within both primary market zones (Fleurhof, Florida, Robertville, Meadowlands) and secondary zones (Florida North, eastern Robertville, Roodepoort North).
Unlocking an Economic Corridor
For Dr Mike Nkuna, founder and Chairman of the Masingita Group of Companies, the project goes beyond bricks and mortar:
“Fleurhof Mall will unlock a direct economic corridor between Soweto and the West Rand, giving local residents and small businesses the opportunity to grow together. This is more than just a development project—it’s about empowering communities and creating opportunities.”
Looking Ahead
Anchored by retail giants Pick n Pay and Shoprite, alongside other national tenants, Fleurhof Mall will cater to the daily needs of residents while establishing itself as a hub of economic activity. Construction is set for completion in August 2026, with the grand opening planned for September 2026.
By bridging Soweto and Roodepoort, Fleurhof Mall is more than a shopping centre—it is a symbol of economic transformation, social integration, and sustainable community development.
