SUMMARY:Back to the City Marks 20 Years of Hip-Hop
DESCRIPTION:Johannesburg is getting ready for a major hip-hop homecoming. \n\n\n\nOn Saturday\, 10 October 2026\, Back to the City International Festival returns to Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown for its 20th anniversary — bringing together artists and audiences across generations\, borders and eras of hip-hop culture. \n\n\n\nBut this year’s celebration isn’t simply about assembling a big-name line-up. It’s about looking at how far the culture has travelled while creating space for the people pushing it forward. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTwo Decades\, One City \n\n\n\nFor 20 years\, Back to the City has been part of Johannesburg’s hip-hop story\, providing a platform where established pioneers and emerging voices can occupy the same cultural space. \n\n\n\nThat history is reflected in the 2026 line-up. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFrom the United States\, critically acclaimed rapper Ab-Soul\, legendary Detroit collective Slum Village\, and the acclaimed duo Blu & Exile bring international perspectives to the festival. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTheir presence adds another layer to an event that has consistently connected South African hip-hop with the wider global culture. \n\n\n\nOn the local front\, the line-up stretches across generations. Cassper Nyovest\, Emtee\, Blxckie\, Stogie T\, Reason\, Tuks\, Touchline and Trompies are among the South African names taking the stage\, alongside a wider roster of artists. \n\n\n\nIt’s a line-up that recognises that South African hip-hop isn’t one sound or one generation. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFrom the Pioneers to What’s Next \n\n\n\nOne of Back to the City’s most interesting roles has always been its ability to put different chapters of the culture in the same room. \n\n\n\nThe 2026 edition continues that tradition by creating a meeting point between artists who helped establish the local movement and younger voices redefining what hip-hop can sound and look like today. \n\n\n\nFor Johannesburg’s young creative community\, that generational conversation matters. \n\n\n\nHip-hop has evolved from music into a wider cultural language — influencing fashion\, language\, visual identity\, dance\, entrepreneurship and the way young people document their realities. \n\n\n\nBack to the City is therefore also a snapshot of that evolution. \n\n\n\nJohannesburg Gets Its Moment \n\n\n\nThere’s an added layer to this year’s festival. \n\n\n\nBack to the City 2026 takes place during Johannesburg’s 140-year anniversary celebrations\, linking the festival’s 20-year history with the city’s much longer story of migration\, creativity\, resilience and urban identity. \n\n\n\nMary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown becomes the meeting point for those two timelines: 140 years of Johannesburg and 20 years of a festival built around hip-hop culture. \n\n\n\nThe result is less a retrospective and more a statement about continuation. \n\n\n\nBack to the City 2026 takes place on 10 October at Mary Fitzgerald Square\, Newtown\, Johannesburg. Tickets are available through Webtickets and Pick n Pay. \n\n\n\nThe question from the festival is fitting for its anniversary year: Are you in the City — or are you hearing about it after?

SUMMARY:Saudi Cinema Heads to Durban
DESCRIPTION:Saudi Stories Take Centre Stage in Durban\n\n\n\nThe Saudi Film Nights tour heads to Durban on 11 October\, bringing two thought-provoking contemporary Saudi films to The Playhouse Company’s Drama Theatre. \n\n\n\nThe Durban programme features Siwar and First Funeral Day\, two very different stories that explore family\, identity\, loss and the complicated truths that can reshape people’s lives. \n\n\n\nWhen DNA Changes Everything \n\n\n\nInspired by true events\, Siwar follows a Saudi family and a Turkish family whose lives are turned upside down after DNA testing reveals that their children were accidentally switched at birth. \n\n\n\nWhat follows is more than a shocking discovery. The film opens up questions around identity\, parenthood\, belonging and what truly makes someone part of a family. \n\n\n\nConfronting Grief and the Past \n\n\n\nFirst Funeral Day takes a more intimate approach\, focusing on an estranged father who returns to his former home following the death of his child. \n\n\n\nHis return forces the family to confront grief\, distance and truths that have remained unresolved. \n\n\n\nTogether\, the two films showcase the emotional range of contemporary Saudi cinema while giving Durban audiences an opportunity to connect with stories that explore universal experiences through distinctly different cultural perspectives. \n\n\n\nWith Saudi filmmakers also attending the screenings\, the Durban stop offers audiences more than a night at the movies — it creates an opportunity for conversation and cultural exchange.

SUMMARY:Saudi Film Nights Closes in Cape Town
DESCRIPTION:After travelling through Johannesburg and Durban\, Saudi Film Nights reaches its final South African stop in Cape Town on 14 October. \n\n\n\nThe programme will take over the historic Labia Theatre\, giving Cape Town audiences an opportunity to experience contemporary Saudi cinema and engage with the stories\, ideas and perspectives shaping a new generation of Saudi filmmakers. \n\n\n\nMore Than Just a Screening \n\n\n\nThe Cape Town leg is not simply about watching films on the big screen. The programme is designed to encourage conversation between audiences and filmmakers\, creating space to explore the cultural and creative ideas behind the work. \n\n\n\nAcross the tour\, Saudi Film Nights has brought stories dealing with family\, relationships\, identity\, work\, grief and social expectations — themes that can connect audiences across borders despite very different cultural contexts. \n\n\n\nA Cultural Exchange Through Film \n\n\n\nFor Cape Town‘s creative community\, the final screening also represents an opportunity to discover filmmaking voices that may be less familiar to South African audiences. \n\n\n\nBy bringing Saudi filmmakers and South African audiences into the same space\, the programme opens the door to conversations about storytelling\, creative practice and potential connections between the two film industries. \n\n\n\nAt the Labia Theatre\, Saudi Film Nights closes its South African tour with cinema as the meeting point — connecting cultures one story at a time.

SUMMARY:Zanele Muholi Brings 20 Years of Faces Home
DESCRIPTION:There is something powerful about returning home with a story that started there. \n\n\n\nFor Zanele Muholi\, that homecoming arrives in Johannesburg this October as Sibaningi brings two decades of Faces and Phases back to the Market Photo Workshop in Newtown — the very place where the landmark portrait series began in 2006. \n\n\n\nOpening on Saturday\, 17 October 2026\, the exhibition arrives just days after Muholi receives the prestigious Hasselblad Award in Gothenburg\, Sweden. But while the international recognition is significant\, Sibaningi feels less like a victory lap and more like a return to the people and place that made the work possible. \n\n\n\nA Homecoming With History \n\n\n\nSibaningi\, an isiZulu word meaning “we are many”\, is a fitting title for an exhibition centred on visibility. \n\n\n\nFaces and Phases has spent 20 years documenting Black lesbian\, queer and trans lives across South Africa and beyond. Rather than reducing those lives to stories of discrimination or violence\, Muholi’s work has consistently insisted on something more fundamental: the right to be seen as whole human beings. \n\n\n\nThe portraits capture people living\, working\, loving\, ageing and changing. \n\n\n\nThat makes this exhibition particularly relevant in a moment when conversations around identity\, representation and belonging continue to shape South African culture. \n\n\n\nAnd there is an important full-circle moment here. Muholi studied at the Market Photo Workshop\, founded by David Goldblatt in 1989. It was within this Johannesburg creative environment that Faces and Phases began. \n\n\n\nTwenty years later\, the work returns with history behind it — and more history still being made. \n\n\n\nMore Than Photographs \n\n\n\nOne of the most compelling aspects of Sibaningi is the way it approaches the archive as something living. \n\n\n\nEarly portraits are placed alongside later images of participants\, allowing audiences to witness changes in gender expression\, relationships\, careers\, homes\, age and circumstance. \n\n\n\nThe photographs therefore become more than individual portraits. Together\, they form a visual record of lives unfolding over time. \n\n\n\nNew faces also enter the series\, reinforcing the idea that the archive is never truly finished. \n\n\n\nFor a younger generation navigating questions of identity and representation online and offline\, that idea resonates. What we document today becomes part of what future generations use to understand who we were. \n\n\n\nFrom Johannesburg to the World \n\n\n\nMuholi’s international recognition makes the Johannesburg exhibition even more significant. \n\n\n\nThe Hasselblad Award — regarded as one of photography’s most prestigious honours — comes with SEK 2 million\, a gold medal\, a Hasselblad camera and a solo exhibition at the Hasselblad Center running until April 2027. \n\n\n\nMuholi is the first Black queer African photographer to receive the award. \n\n\n\nYet Sibaningi deliberately brings that global moment back to Johannesburg. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition opens during Africa Pride month and forms part of the Muholi Art Institute‘s ongoing work around photography\, education and archives. \n\n\n\nOn opening day\, Muholi will speak at midday before the exhibition officially opens. Entry is free\, making the opportunity to experience two decades of South African visual history accessible to a broad Johannesburg audience. \n\n\n\nWe Are Many \n\n\n\nSibaningi ultimately feels like both an archive and an affirmation. \n\n\n\nTwenty years after Faces and Phases began\, the message remains clear: these lives were here\, are here and will continue to be here. \n\n\n\nBack in the city where the series started\, Muholi isn’t simply looking backwards. \n\n\n\nThey are showing Johannesburg how much has changed\, how much remains unfinished — and why documenting the present still matters. \n\n\n\nSibaningi runs from 17 October to 5 December 2026 at the Market Photo Workshop in Newtown\, Johannesburg. Entry is free.

SUMMARY:Music Meets the Wild at Cradle’s 10th Birthday
DESCRIPTION:Forget the usual festival routine of concrete\, traffic and city noise. On 17 October\, Gauteng’s music crowd is being invited to trade the urban jungle for an actual one. \n\n\n\nMusic in the Jungle is bringing some of South Africa‘s biggest sounds to the Cradle of Humankind as Cradle Boutique Hotel celebrates its 10th anniversary with a day-to-night experience built around music\, nature\, food and hospitality. \n\n\n\nAnd with Sjava\, Kabza De Small\, Focalistic\, Mörda\, Langa Mavuso\, Thatohatsi\, Thando Zide\, Khuli Chana and Lamiez Holworthy on the lineup\, the music is clearly not taking a back seat. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA Different Kind of Gauteng Gig \n\n\n\nThe interesting part isn’t simply who’s performing. It’s where the performances are happening. \n\n\n\nSet within a 9\,000-hectare nature reserve\, Music in the Jungle is designed to move away from the conventional festival environment and place the audience inside the landscape of the Cradle of Humankind. \n\n\n\nFor young Gauteng audiences accustomed to packed venues\, rooftop parties and large-scale city events\, that change of scenery could be part of the attraction. \n\n\n\nThe experience is expected to evolve throughout the day\, starting with more relaxed daytime sounds before shifting into an energetic evening celebration. \n\n\n\nIt’s essentially a day out\, music experience and escape from the city rolled into one. \n\n\n\nA Soundtrack That Moves Across Genres \n\n\n\nThe lineup reflects the increasingly fluid nature of South African music culture. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAmapiano\, hip-hop\, Afro-house\, R&B\, soul and contemporary African sounds will all feature\, creating a programme that can move between different moods rather than locking the event into one genre. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFrom Kabza De Small and Focalistic’s amapiano influence to Sjava’s distinctive hip-hop and storytelling\, Mörda’s Afro-house territory and Langa Mavuso‘s soulful sound\, the bill brings together different corners of the country’s contemporary music scene. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThat diversity also gives the event a distinctly Mzansi character: different sounds\, different audiences and one shared space. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTen Years\, One Big Celebration \n\n\n\nFor Cradle Boutique Hotel\, the event marks a decade of operating in one of Gauteng’s most recognisable natural environments. \n\n\n\nGeneral Manager Wayne Fisher says the celebration was designed around the destination’s combination of music\, hospitality\, nature\, food and community. \n\n\n\nThat makes Music in the Jungle more than a birthday party. It is also an opportunity for the hotel to position the Cradle as a destination for experiences that extend beyond traditional accommodation. \n\n\n\nFor the audience\, meanwhile\, the proposition is straightforward: dress for the jungle\, bring your appetite for music and leave the city behind for a few hours. \n\n\n\nWith additional event details still to come\, Music in the Jungle is shaping up as a different proposition for Gauteng’s October entertainment calendar: less city\, more nature; less ordinary gig\, more destination experience.

SUMMARY:Mpho Popps to Host 2026 Creator Awards
DESCRIPTION:South Africa’s creator economy is no longer just about what happens on our phone screens. It is shaping conversations\, launching careers\, influencing brands and increasingly becoming a serious part of the country’s cultural economy. \n\n\n\nNow\, the people behind that influence are getting another major night in the spotlight. \n\n\n\nThe 2026 Content Creator Awards\, sponsored by Samsung\, has announced entertainment heavyweight Mpho “Popps” Modikoane as this year’s host. The awards take place on Saturday\, 17 October 2026\, at The Galleria in Sandton. \n\n\n\nWhen Creators Become Culture-Makers \n\n\n\nPopps is a fitting choice for an event celebrating digital creativity. \n\n\n\nHis career crosses comedy\, television\, podcasting and live entertainment — spaces where understanding an audience is everything. That ability to read a room could bring a distinctly energetic flavour to an awards ceremony celebrating an industry that is itself constantly changing. \n\n\n\nFor Popps\, the significance goes beyond trophies. \n\n\n\nHe sees creators as people actively driving culture\, keeping audiences entertained\, informed and inspired through their daily digital experiences. \n\n\n\nThat perspective is particularly relevant in a South African landscape where creators are increasingly building businesses around their personalities\, communities and creative ideas. \n\n\n\nA Creator Economy That Keeps Evolving \n\n\n\nThe Content Creator Awards launched in 2022 and has grown into an annual platform recognising not only individual creators\, but also the brands\, agencies and platforms contributing to the wider ecosystem. \n\n\n\nThe 2026 edition features 20 categories\, with its entry and judging criteria refined to better reflect how quickly the creator landscape is evolving. \n\n\n\nImportantly\, the judging framework has been developed with the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) South Africa\, bringing greater consistency and industry alignment to the process. \n\n\n\nThat matters because creator culture is no longer operating on a simple formula of followers and likes. Creativity\, influence\, originality\, community engagement and commercial impact are becoming increasingly interconnected. \n\n\n\nMore Than an Awards Night \n\n\n\nBehind the glamour of Sandton’s red carpet will be a bigger conversation about where South African digital culture is heading. \n\n\n\nFrom YouTube personalities and TikTok storytellers to podcasters\, visual creators and niche online communities\, the creator economy has opened new routes into entertainment and entrepreneurship. \n\n\n\nThe awards therefore represent more than recognition. They are also a snapshot of an industry finding its identity — and deciding what meaningful creative success looks like. \n\n\n\nWith Samsung Galaxy\, YouTube\, Telkom\, 947\, eVOD\, Cars.co.za and The Creator Club supporting the event\, the night also highlights how closely brands are now connected to creator-led culture. \n\n\n\nReady for the Main Event? \n\n\n\nFor young South Africans building audiences from bedrooms\, studios\, streets and smartphones\, seeing creators celebrated at this level sends an important message: digital creativity has become a legitimate cultural force. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAnd with Mpho Popps holding the microphone\, expect plenty of personality along the way. \n\n\n\nEarly-bird tickets are priced at R395 and are available through Quicket\, giving audiences the opportunity to experience one of the biggest nights on South Africa’s creator calendar.

SUMMARY:Politically Aweh Turns Election Chaos Into Comedy
DESCRIPTION:Politics can feel exhausting. Between campaign promises\, rising living costs\, political debates and the never-ending stream of WhatsApp opinions\, keeping up with what is actually happening can sometimes feel like a full-time job. \n\n\n\nPolitically Aweh: Poll Dancing is taking a different approach: make people laugh while giving them something useful to think about. \n\n\n\nOn Wednesday\, 21 October 2026\, the political satire show heads to Cape Town‘s Homecoming Centre for an evening combining comedy\, journalism\, interviews\, sketches and fact-checked political commentary. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhen Politics Becomes Performance \n\n\n\nHosted by KG Mokgadi and Zoë Human\, Poll Dancing brings together comedians and political voices including Dillan Oliphant\, Dan Corder\, Lindy Johnson and Naledi Mashishi\, alongside additional contributors. \n\n\n\nThe format moves beyond a conventional stand-up show. Audiences can expect a mix of sketches\, reporting\, interviews and commentary designed to unpack the political stories dominating public conversation. \n\n\n\nThat makes the show particularly relevant in a South African environment where political information increasingly arrives through social media clips\, memes\, forwarded messages and heated group-chat debates. \n\n\n\nInstead of simply adding to the noise\, Poll Dancing aims to turn that noise into something audiences can interrogate — and laugh at. \n\n\n\nThe Facts Behind the Punchlines \n\n\n\nThe show’s biggest distinction is its attempt to pair satire with context. \n\n\n\nJournalists and research partners are involved in helping unpack political developments\, campaign promises and issues playing out on the ground. According to the organisers\, the information is fact-checked while politicians and political institutions remain open to scrutiny. \n\n\n\nThat balance creates an interesting space between comedy and civic conversation. \n\n\n\nThe objective isn’t to tell audiences what political position to hold. Instead\, Poll Dancing uses humour as an entry point into subjects that can otherwise feel complicated\, frustrating or inaccessible. \n\n\n\nFor younger audiences especially\, that approach can make political conversations feel less like a lecture and more like something worth engaging with. \n\n\n\nCome For The Laughs\, Leave With Context \n\n\n\nThere is also something deliberately social about the show’s concept. \n\n\n\nBring the friend who claims they “don’t follow politics” but somehow has a 17-minute WhatsApp voice note ready for every political development. Bring your own opinions. Bring the questions you have about the headlines. \n\n\n\nThen expect the evening to challenge some of the assumptions that come with them. \n\n\n\nPolitically Aweh: Poll Dancing takes place at 7PM on Wednesday\, 21 October 2026\, at the Homecoming Centre in Cape Town. Tickets are R250 via Quicket. \n\n\n\nFor a country where politics can dominate everyday conversations\, perhaps laughing at the chaos is one way of making space to understand it. \n\n\n\nGet informed. Get involved. Get to the polls.

SUMMARY:Purple Speedos\, Big Conversations: Daredevil Run 2026
DESCRIPTION:On 23 October\, Johannesburg is about to get a whole lot more purple. \n\n\n\nThe 2026 Hollard Daredevil Run is returning to Zoo Lake\, with thousands of participants expected to ditch their everyday running gear for the campaign’s most recognisable uniform: a very small purple speedo. \n\n\n\nBut beneath the laughs\, selfies and outrageous race-day outfits is a conversation that South African men cannot afford to keep avoiding. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMore Than Just a 5km Run \n\n\n\nNow in its 18th year\, the Hollard Daredevil Run has mastered the art of making an uncomfortable subject impossible to ignore. \n\n\n\nIts 2026 tagline\, “Lekker Balls. Lekker Life”\, brings the campaign’s irreverent personality to the forefront while keeping the focus firmly on prostate and testicular cancers. \n\n\n\nThe idea is simple: use spectacle to create conversation. \n\n\n\nSeeing hundreds of men running through Johannesburg in purple speedos might generate plenty of jokes and social-media content\, but the campaign ultimately wants those moments of attention to lead somewhere more meaningful — understanding cancer risks\, recognising changes in your body and taking early detection seriously. \n\n\n\nAnd that message extends beyond the men taking part. \n\n\n\nTurning Awkward Conversations Into Action \n\n\n\nMen’s health conversations can still be uncomfortable in many families\, friendship circles and workplaces. The Daredevil Run deliberately cuts through that discomfort with humour\, community and a little bit of embarrassment. \n\n\n\nHollard South Africa‘s Head of Experiential Marketing\, Adél Kriel\, says the attention generated by the purple speedos only matters if it gets people talking about the serious issue underneath the campaign. \n\n\n\nThat makes the run particularly relevant to a younger generation navigating a culture where conversations about mental and physical health are becoming increasingly open. \n\n\n\nThe goal isn’t simply to cross a finish line. It is to encourage people to know their risks\, understand their bodies and seek medical advice when necessary. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Bigger Impact Behind the Purple \n\n\n\nThe campaign also turns participation into tangible support. \n\n\n\nFunds raised through the run contribute to CANSA and the Prostate Cancer Foundation (PCF)\, supporting awareness initiatives\, PSA screening and patient support. \n\n\n\nFor participants\, that means the seemingly ridiculous decision to run 5km in a speedo can contribute to something considerably more serious. \n\n\n\nThe run also embraces the idea that you don’t necessarily have to be an athlete to get involved. Friends\, families\, colleagues and student groups can participate together\, making the event as much about community as competition. \n\n\n\nJohannesburg Is Just The Beginning \n\n\n\nThe main Johannesburg event takes place at Zoo Lake on Friday\, 23 October at 15:00\, while Daredevil Runs will take place at various locations around the country on the same day. \n\n\n\nFor Mzansi’s urban communities\, the event offers an unusual combination of entertainment\, social connection and purpose. \n\n\n\nBecause sometimes getting people to talk about a serious issue requires doing something completely unexpected. \n\n\n\nThis October\, the purple speedo is the attention-grabber. The conversation is the real finish line.

SUMMARY:Corona Sunsets Opens Summer in Johannesburg
DESCRIPTION:Johannesburg is where the 2026 Corona Sunsets Summer Tour begins\, bringing the spirit of golden hour\, outdoor experiences and summer energy to The Fat Olive on 24 October. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Johannesburg stop marks the opening chapter of Corona Sunsets’ biggest tour journey yet\, with seven destinations planned across South Africa and Botswana. \n\n\n\nSummer Starts in Joburg \n\n\n\nFor Johannesburg’s young\, social crowd\, the 24 October event offers an early taste of the summer season — with music positioned as the starting point for a broader outdoor experience. \n\n\n\nThe tour’s More Than Music concept invites guests to do more than simply watch performances. The experience brings together creativity\, nature\, connection and activities designed to encourage guests to participate. \n\n\n\nAmong these is the Eco Passport Journey\, which guides attendees through different experiences around the venue. \n\n\n\nGuests can create personalised Sunnycords\, take part in an interactive drumming session and capture their own Living Is Calling moment at the Instagram station. \n\n\n\nThose who complete the journey can also access a mixology experience\, where they can create their own Corona drink or cocktail. \n\n\n\nThe First Stop of a Bigger Journey \n\n\n\nThe Fat Olive event is just the beginning. \n\n\n\nFollowing Johannesburg\, the tour moves to Pretoria on 21 November\, Durban on 28 November and Johannesburg again on 5 December. It then crosses the border for its first-ever Botswana stop at Dimawe in Gaborone on 12 December. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe tour continues to Cape Town and Ballito before wrapping up on 19 December. \n\n\n\nArtists for the tour are still to be announced\, keeping another major part of the summer experience under wraps. \n\n\n\nFor Johannesburg\, however\, the countdown is already clear: 24 October is when the Corona Sunsets summer journey officially gets underway.

SUMMARY:Thomas van Tonder Takes on 600 Monkey Bars
DESCRIPTION:600 Monkey Bars\, 216 Metres Up: Thomas van Tonder’s Biggest Challenge Yet \n\n\n\nWhat does it take to chase a dream when even you aren’t sure you can achieve it? For South African obstacle course racing (OCR) world champion Thomas van Tonder\, the answer involves more than 600 monkey bars\, months of gruelling preparation and a crossing suspended beneath one of the country’s most spectacular landmarks. \n\n\n\nOn 26 October 2026\, van Tonder will attempt to conquer the Red Bull Bridge Bars course beneath Bloukrans Bridge in the Eastern Cape\, 216 metres above the Bloukrans River. The challenge will test not only his physical limits but also his willingness to embrace uncertainty in pursuit of something extraordinary. \n\n\n\nThis isn’t just another extreme sports spectacle. It’s a story about ambition\, resilience and what happens when you deliberately choose the harder road. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA Course Designed to Push Human Limits \n\n\n\nSpanning the 451-metre bridge’s dramatic arch\, the course features more than 600 suspended monkey bars that follow the structure’s natural curves. Instead of offering a straightforward horizontal crossing\, the route forces van Tonder to climb uphill\, traverse the flatter crown and descend the opposite side. \n\n\n\nEach section presents a different physical battle. The ascent demands pulling power\, the middle tests endurance\, and the descent requires sustained control as fatigue sets in. \n\n\n\nFor someone who has competed across four continents and previously set a Guinness World Record with a rope climb between Johannesburg’s Soweto Towers in 2020\, this is unfamiliar territory. \n\n\n\nVan Tonder could have chosen a more manageable route. Instead\, he deliberately selected the version that nobody around him could confidently say was achievable. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHis reasoning is simple: if a challenge doesn’t push him into the unknown\, it might not be worth pursuing. \n\n\n\nFatherhood Has Changed the Meaning of the Challenge \n\n\n\nBehind the athletic ambition is a more personal motivation. Becoming a father has reshaped how van Tonder thinks about achievement\, responsibility and the example he sets for others. \n\n\n\nRather than simply telling people to work hard and follow their dreams\, he wants them to witness what that commitment looks like in practice. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe preparation itself has become part of the message. Months of specialised training have exposed weaknesses he hadn’t fully addressed\, particularly in his upper body. Injuries\, including persistent elbow tendonitis and shoulder pain\, have added another layer of difficulty. \n\n\n\nEven standing beneath Bloukrans Bridge for the first time brought a reality check. The structure looked far more imposing in person than it did on camera. \n\n\n\nFor young South Africans navigating their own ambitions\, that honesty matters. Progress doesn’t always look like confidence\, and pursuing a goal doesn’t mean having every answer before taking the first step. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSometimes\, growth begins with admitting that you’re not ready yet. \n\n\n\nThe Engineering Behind the Adrenaline \n\n\n\nWhile van Tonder prepares to put his strength and endurance to the test\, a specialist team faces a challenge of its own: building a safe course beneath a major bridge without permanently altering the structure. \n\n\n\nRichard Lievaart\, head of rigging and safety director at Vertical Safety Systems (VSS)\, has overseen the technical work required to make the crossing possible. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe installation cannot rely on drilling into or bolting equipment directly to the bridge. Instead\, the team has developed a temporary rigging solution with two independent safety systems: a rail system secured to the bridge’s truss and a separate safety line connected directly to van Tonder. \n\n\n\nThe engineering is a reminder that extreme sports achievements rarely happen through individual effort alone. Behind every athlete pushing boundaries is a network of people whose planning\, expertise and decisions help make the seemingly impossible achievable. \n\n\n\nSafety\, in this case\, is not a supporting detail. It is fundamental to the entire project. \n\n\n\nRed Bull Bridge Bars: When and Where to Watch \n\n\n\nThe main attempt is scheduled for 26 October 2026 at Bloukrans Bridge in the Tsitsikamma region of the Eastern Cape. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe crossing will be livestreamed on YouTube and Red Bull TV. If weather conditions prevent the attempt on the scheduled date\, 27 October 2026 has been set aside as the contingency date. \n\n\n\nFollow @redbullza on social media for updates and livestream timings in the days leading up to the attempt. \n\n\n\nWhy This Challenge Matters Beyond the Bridge \n\n\n\nVan Tonder’s goal extends beyond completing an extraordinary obstacle course. He hopes the project will encourage people to pursue ambitions that might appear unrealistic\, unconventional or even strange to those around them. \n\n\n\nThat message resonates in a country where young people are constantly finding creative ways to build careers\, develop skills and create opportunities despite uncertainty and limited resources. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNot every dream requires 600 monkey bars or a crossing hundreds of metres above a river. But every meaningful ambition demands some combination of preparation\, persistence and the courage to keep going when the outcome isn’t guaranteed. \n\n\n\nWhether van Tonder completes the crossing or not\, his preparation has already demonstrated something important: pursuing a difficult goal can reveal strengths\, weaknesses and possibilities that comfort never will. \n\n\n\nOn 26 October\, South Africa will watch one athlete take on a remarkable physical challenge. The bigger question is what the rest of us might be inspired to attempt once we see him reach for the other side.

SUMMARY:HACC 2026: Shaping the Future of Global Filmmaking
DESCRIPTION:HACC 2026: Defining the Future of Filmmaking \n\n\n\nThe Hollywood African Cinema Connection (HACC) returns for its highly anticipated third edition\, set to take place in Cape Town from 30 October to 2 November 2026. Under the powerful theme “Our Land. Our Heritage.”\, the festival continues its mission of bridging African storytelling with global industry expertise\, while unlocking new opportunities for filmmakers across continents. \n\n\n\nPositioned as a dynamic hub for collaboration\, HACC 2026 invites submissions from filmmakers across Africa\, Asia—including the Middle East\, India\, and Southeast Asia—as well as the diaspora and international creators whose work resonates with these regions. The festival seeks compelling narratives that explore land\, identity\, heritage\, and belonging—stories that reflect both personal and collective histories. \n\n\n\nA Global Platform for Storytellers \n\n\n\nHACC has steadily built its reputation as a vital platform where creativity meets industry access. Selected filmmakers will have the opportunity to showcase their work to distributors\, buyers\, and key decision-makers\, while engaging directly with audiences in Cape Town. \n\n\n\nSubmissions are now open via FilmFreeway\, with eligibility limited to films completed after October 2024. Preference will be given to South African premieres\, further reinforcing the festival’s commitment to spotlighting fresh\, locally rooted storytelling. \n\n\n\nStrategic Industry Alignment \n\n\n\nThe 2026 edition is strategically aligned with MIP Africa and FAME Week Africa\, positioning HACC within one of the continent’s most influential entertainment ecosystems. This alignment significantly enhances visibility for participating filmmakers\, opening doors to global distribution deals\, co-production opportunities\, and industry partnerships. \n\n\n\nDriving Innovation in Film \n\n\n\nBeyond screenings\, HACC 2026 will host a curated programme of discussions and panels exploring the future of filmmaking across the Global South. Topics will include emerging technologies such as virtual production\, digital infrastructure\, and the growing influence of Web3 and AI in content creation. \n\n\n\nEqually important are conversations around evolving funding and distribution models\, including decentralised finance and crowdfunding—tools that are reshaping how films are financed and shared globally. \n\n\n\nA Gateway for Investment and Partnerships \n\n\n\nHACC 2026 also presents a compelling opportunity for investors\, brands\, and industry service providers. From film companies and airlines to tech innovators and hospitality groups\, the festival offers high-impact exposure to a valuable audience of creatives\, buyers\, and decision-makers. \n\n\n\nWith premium media visibility and direct engagement opportunities\, partners are positioned at the heart of a fast-growing global content economy. The festival serves as a rare gateway into scalable growth across film\, tourism\, and the broader creative industries. \n\n\n\nCelebrating Excellence and Talent \n\n\n\nOver the four-day event\, HACC will present a carefully curated selection of films alongside awards recognising excellence in filmmaking. These accolades are designed not only to honour creative achievement but also to support the continued development and distribution of winning projects. \n\n\n\nVisionary Leadership \n\n\n\nHACC was founded by Weaam Williams\, a South African writer\, director\, and actress with nearly two decades of experience in the industry. Her acclaimed body of work includes Hip-Hop Revolution\, which earned recognition from Spike Lee\, and District Six: Rising from the Dust\, now streaming on Amazon Prime Video. \n\n\n\nWilliams continues to play a pivotal role in nurturing emerging talent and expanding access to international distribution networks\, reinforcing HACC’s mission to connect creators with global opportunities. \n\n\n\nBuilding the Future of Cinema \n\n\n\nSupported by an expanding network of international partners across film\, technology\, and innovation sectors\, HACC 2026 is more than a festival—it is a movement aimed at redefining the future of storytelling. \n\n\n\nBy fostering collaboration\, embracing technological advancement\, and amplifying diverse voices\, HACC is shaping a new narrative for African\, Asian\, and diaspora cinema on the global stage. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFilmmakers are encouraged to submit early ahead of the upcoming deadline on 27 June 2026\, as the festival anticipates a high volume of entries. \n\n\n\nAs the global film industry continues to evolve\, HACC 2026 stands as a powerful testament to the role of storytelling in connecting cultures\, driving innovation\, and creating meaningful impact worldwide.

SUMMARY:LYFE 2026 Brings New Sounds to Joburg
DESCRIPTION:Joburg’s summer soundtrack is getting a fresh chapter as Y brings LYFE 2026 back to Marks Park\, Emmarentia\, on Saturday\, 31 October. \n\n\n\nBut this isn’t simply another date on the city’s gig calendar. LYFE is positioning itself as a meeting point for the sounds\, artists and audiences pushing South African music beyond predictable genre lines. \n\n\n\nWith a line-up moving through R&B\, neo-soul\, contemporary jazz and alternative sounds\, the festival is tapping into a generation that wants music experiences that feel personal\, discovery-driven and connected to culture. \n\n\n\nA Line-Up Built Around Discovery \n\n\n\nLeading the South African charge are Shekhinah\, Thando Zide\, Lusanda and Umzulu Phaqa\, bringing different musical perspectives to a festival built around variety rather than a single sound. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoining them is London-raised singer-songwriter AMA\, formerly known as AMA LOU. Her music blends contemporary R&B with neo-soul\, garage and drill\, adding an international perspective to LYFE’s distinctly South African foundation. \n\n\n\nThat combination is significant. \n\n\n\nSouth African audiences are increasingly engaging with global sounds while local artists continue to reinterpret them through their own experiences. LYFE’s programming reflects that exchange\, putting homegrown talent alongside an artist whose sound has travelled from London to an international audience. \n\n\n\nMore Than the Main Stage \n\n\n\nThe experience extends beyond the headline performances\, with Y’s own LesediTheDJ\, Venom\, Rarri\, Fae-Fae and Fif_Laaa bringing alternative selections to the day. \n\n\n\nOn hosting duties\, Ayanda MVP\, Nia Brown\, Hey Shawty\, Karen Mthethwa and Tulz Madala will bring Y’s familiar personality and audience connection to the festival. \n\n\n\nFor Music Curator Codi Dinca\, the intention is to create a musical journey that moves between the familiar\, unexpected and new — giving listeners room to discover artists and sounds they may not encounter in their everyday playlists. \n\n\n\nThat makes LYFE particularly relevant to a young Joburg audience constantly searching for the next sound\, artist or cultural moment. \n\n\n\nYour LYFE 2026 Episode \n\n\n\nThink of the day as a full-length musical episode: 10AM to 8PM at Marks Park\, with the story unfolding through live performances\, DJs\, hosts and the energy of a crowd united by alternative music. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThere is also a practical incentive for early birds. Y has introduced a discounted early-arrival ticket\, with attendees required to arrive by 1PM to access the special rate. Those arriving later will pay an additional fee at the door. \n\n\n\nLYFE 2026 takes place on Saturday\, 31 October 2026\, at Marks Park\, Emmarentia. The event is strictly 18+. \n\n\n\nFor a city whose cultural identity is constantly evolving\, LYFE is creating space for the artists and sounds helping shape what comes next. \n\n\n\nTickets are available through Webtickets.

SUMMARY:SWV Joins Pretoria’s Ultimate R&B Experience
DESCRIPTION:Pretoria is getting an even bigger dose of nostalgia this October\, as legendary R&B trio SWV joins Brian McKnight and All-4-One for the Saturday\, 31 October edition of the Ultimate R&B Experience at SunBet Arena. \n\n\n\nThe announcement comes after the Cape Town leg officially sold out and more than 17\,000 tickets have already been sold nationwide\, signalling a strong appetite for live R&B in South Africa. \n\n\n\nFor fans who grew up with the genre’s defining voices\, this isn’t simply another concert. It is an opportunity to experience the soundtrack of different generations in one room. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFrom Cape Town Sell-Out to Pretoria Expansion \n\n\n\nRemoakantse Holdings has responded to the demand by adding SWV to the Pretoria line-up\, turning an already nostalgic weekend into an even bigger celebration of classic R&B. \n\n\n\nThe trio\, best known for timeless tracks including Weak\, Right Here and Rain\, will share the stage with Brian McKnight and All-4-One on 31 October. \n\n\n\nThe move also highlights something happening across South Africa‘s live entertainment landscape: audiences are willing to show up for established artists when the experience connects with memories\, culture and music that has remained relevant decades later. \n\n\n\nAccording to Remoakantse Holdings managing director Thabiso “Skeelo” Mogasha\, the decision followed fans asking for more after the strong response to the tour. \n\n\n\nThree R&B Heavyweights\, One Pretoria Weekend \n\n\n\nThe Ultimate R&B Experience now offers Pretoria audiences a particularly strong combination of voices. \n\n\n\nBrian McKnight brings his celebrated catalogue and signature vocal style\, while All-4-One represent another era of R&B and soul-pop classics. Adding SWV brings a powerful female presence and another layer of 1990s R&B nostalgia to the line-up. \n\n\n\nFor younger listeners discovering these artists through playlists\, TikTok clips\, samples and conversations with older generations\, the show could also become a bridge between eras. \n\n\n\nIt is the kind of concert where parents\, older siblings and younger music fans can potentially find common ground through songs that have travelled across generations. \n\n\n\nPretoria Gets the Big Weekend \n\n\n\nThe updated schedule puts Pretoria firmly in the spotlight. \n\n\n\nCape Town: 28 October 2026 – SOLD OUTPretoria: 30 October 2026 – SunBet ArenaPretoria: 31 October 2026 – SunBet Arena\, featuring Brian McKnight\, SWV and All-4-One \n\n\n\nTickets are available exclusively through Webtickets and Pick n Pay outlets nationwide. \n\n\n\nWith the Cape Town date already sold out and ticket sales surpassing 17\,000 nationally\, the Pretoria shows are shaping up as a major fixture on South Africa‘s October gig calendar. \n\n\n\nFor R&B lovers\, the message is simple: Pretoria just got another reason to turn up.
