SUMMARY:Out of the Icebox – Sanlam Celebrates 60 Years of Art Collecting with Rarely Seen Masterpieces
DESCRIPTION:Sanlam Opens Its Vaults for a Celebratory 60-Year Art Retrospective \n\n\n\nIn a momentous tribute to six decades of artistic patronage\, Sanlam is lifting the curtain on one of South Africa’s most distinguished corporate art collections. From 1 June to 29 August 2025\, the Sanlam Art Gallery in Bellville will host two major exhibitions — Out of the Icebox and Manifesto — to mark the 60th anniversary of the Sanlam Art Collection. \n\n\n\nBoasting over 2\,000 works spanning from 1874 to the present day\, the Sanlam Art Collection is now valued at an impressive R210 million. What began in 1965 as a humble initiative to decorate corporate offices has evolved into a vital archive of South Africa’s visual art heritage. \n\n\n\nOut of the Icebox: A Journey Through Six Decades of Collecting \n\n\n\nThe headline exhibition\, Out of the Icebox\, takes visitors on a rich journey through time\, showcasing 90 works acquired from 1965 to today. The aptly titled show refers to “defrosting” artworks that have been stored away or hidden in office corridors — offering the public a rare opportunity to encounter important yet rarely seen pieces. \n\n\n\nStefan Hundt\, Curator of the Sanlam Art Collection\n\n\n\nThis curated selection reads like a who’s who of South African art history\, featuring icons such as: \n\n\n\n\nIrma Stern\, Gerard Sekoto\, Walter Battiss\, Maggie Laubser\n\n\n\nGerard Bhengu\, David Koloane\, Alexis Preller\, Simon Lekgetho\n\n\n\nContemporary artists like Blessing Ngobeni\, Frans Thoka\, and Franz Asha Zero\n\n\n\n\n\n“Out of the Icebox is more than a retrospective — it’s a celebration of South African creativity and a mirror to our collective history\,” . \nsays Stefan Hundt\, Curator of the Sanlam Art Collection\n\n\n\nManifesto: Art in the Age of Protest \n\n\n\nRunning parallel to Out of the Icebox\, the second exhibition\, Manifesto\, is a compact but emotionally resonant showcase. Featuring 18 impactful works\, the exhibition focuses on themes of protest\, human rights\, and democracy\, offering a bold reflection on South Africa’s journey from apartheid to the present. \n\n\n\nInstalled to coincide with Human Rights Day\, Freedom Day\, and Youth Day\, Manifesto challenges viewers to confront historical injustice and contemplate the socio-political currents shaping the country today. \n\n\n\nBuilding a Cultural Legacy \n\n\n\nSanlam’s commitment to the arts was never merely aesthetic. Established during a period of political and cultural isolation in 1965\, the collection was a strategic act of corporate citizenship\, supporting artists whose voices were often sidelined. From its inception\, an independent advisory committee curated the works — a decision that cemented the collection’s credibility and depth. \n\n\n\nAs Hundt notes\, “Our gallery is not just a space to show art — it’s a space to reflect\, to engage\, and to confront the realities artists explore.” \n\n\n\nWith dedicated galleries in Bellville and Sandton\, Sanlam continues to make space for bold\, complex\, and often challenging works that push beyond the confines of traditional corporate collections. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA Cultural Treasure for the Nation \n\n\n\nWhile the collection’s market value exceeds R210 million\, Hundt insists that its cultural value is immeasurable. “Like the Medicis of Renaissance Florence\, Sanlam’s patronage leaves a permanent imprint on South Africa’s cultural history. These works are part of our national soul.” \n\n\n\nVisitors to the exhibition will come away with a renewed appreciation for the depth\, diversity\, and global relevance of South African art. \n\n\n\n\n“Our artists can hold their own on any stage in the world. This exhibition is proof.” \nsays Hundt\n\n\n\nPlan Your Visit \n\n\n\n\n🎟️ Admission: Free to the public\n\n\n\n🗣️ Guided Tours: Available on request\n\n✉️ Email: sanlamart@sanlam.co.za\n\n\n\n📞 Phone: 021 947 3359\n\n\n\n📱 WhatsApp: 083 457 2699\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhether you’re an art aficionado or simply curious about South Africa’s visual heritage\, Out of the Icebox and Manifesto promise a powerful\, thought-provoking celebration of the country’s artistic legacy — and a rare glimpse into works that have shaped\, mirrored\, and challenged the nation for six decades.

SUMMARY:The SN Project Returns to Artistry with an Intimate Live Showcase on 9 August
DESCRIPTION:Following the critically acclaimed release of Pantomime Vol. 1 earlier this year\, Siphephelo Ndlovu – known as The SN Project – is returning to the stage for a special Women’s Month performance at Artistry\, Johannesburg’s premier cultural venue\, on Saturday\, 9 August at 7 PM. The performance promises to be an intimate journey through sound\, storytelling\, and emotion as the artist unveils material from his forthcoming EP\, Pantomime Vol. 2. \n\n\n\nRenowned for his evocative compositions\, lush sonic landscapes\, and heartfelt lyricism\, The SN Project has established himself as a singular voice in South Africa’s contemporary music scene. This show will mark his first live showcase of new music since the release of Pantomime Vol. 1\, a deeply personal project exploring themes of love\, heartbreak\, and self-discovery. \n\n\n\nA Musical Journey Rooted in Duality \n\n\n\nSiphephelo Ndlovu’s musical journey began at the prestigious Drakensberg Boys’ Choir School\, where his early love for music was nurtured. Later\, he pursued formal training at the University of the Witwatersrand\, earning a Bachelor of Music with Honours in 2017. Under the mentorship of celebrated South African musicians such as David Cousins\, Andre Petersen\, and Carlo Mombelli\, he honed a unique style rooted in authenticity and cultural depth. \n\n\n\nHailing from both Johannesburg and Bergville\, KwaZulu-Natal\, The SN Project’s work beautifully fuses the structured freedom of jazz with the harmonic poetry of isiZulu musical traditions. This fusion was first fully realized on his debut album\, Afrikanization (2020)\, an ambitious work that redefined the African jazz experience for global audiences. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPantomime Vol. 1 and Beyond \n\n\n\nReleased in early 2025\, Pantomime Vol. 1 showcased The SN Project’s talents not only as a performer but also as a producer. The EP blends neo-soul grooves\, cinematic textures\, and layered production with heartfelt storytelling. A highlight of the EP is “I Just Wanna”\, a hauntingly beautiful duet with Zoë Modiga\, which explores the complexities of unspoken emotional truths in relationships. \n\n\n\nPantomime Vol. 2 promises to continue this sonic narrative—deeper\, rawer\, and even more emotionally resonant. Attendees at the 9 August event will be the first to experience the next chapter in this bold two-part series. \n\n\n\nDon’t Miss This One-Night-Only Experience \n\n\n\nSet in the intimate and artistically charged environment of Artistry\, this performance offers fans a rare opportunity to experience The SN Project up close. As South Africa celebrates Women’s Month\, the evening will also serve as a tribute to the emotional power and creative strength of feminine energy—an undercurrent that flows through The SN Project’s latest works. \n\n\n\nFollow The SN Project and stay tuned for the official release date of Pantomime Vol. 2—a sonic diary from one of South Africa’s most compelling contemporary voices.

SUMMARY:A New Lens on Heritage: Cape Town Photo Festival
DESCRIPTION:Feature image by Brenton Geach. Tweede Nuwe Jaar exhibition. \n\n\n\nA New Lens on Heritage: Cape Town Photography Festival Explores Identity\, Memory\, and Belonging \n\n\n\nThe inaugural Cape Town Photography Festival\, running from 4 to 27 September\, is set to immerse audiences in a vibrant celebration of photography under the theme HERITAGE. Aligning with South Africa’s Heritage Month\, the festival invites reflection on identity\, memory\, and place\, showcasing local\, national\, and international visual narratives. \n\n\n\n\n“Heritage is a powerful thread that connects past\, present\, and future. It fosters a sense of belonging\, grounding us in time and place\, and helps us understand where we come from and who we are. Heritage informs identity.” \nFestival Director Heidi Erdmann explains that the theme emerged naturally:\n\n\n\nThe festival programme includes dynamic exhibitions\, talks\, and workshops\, with a strong emphasis on engaging younger generations through educational initiatives. \n\n\n\nReviving Cape Town’s Photography Scene \n\n\n\nCape Town has a rich history with photography festivals\, having hosted the Month of Photography from the late 1990s to 2014. Erdmann has participated in every edition since 1999 and says the idea to relaunch gained momentum after her visit to Barcelona’s Panoràmic Festival in 2023. Turning 60 in September 2025 became her personal catalyst. \n\n\n\nSince 2014\, the photographic landscape in South Africa has evolved\, with more diverse practitioners and audiences. Cape Town itself has grown as a cultural hub\, now home to two new private museums and an expanding art scene. \n\n\n\nA boy from Posh Vibrant Youth troupe leaps during the Tweede Nuwe Jaar minstrel procession\, 2 January 2024. Photo credit: Brenton Geach / Gallo Images\n\n\n\nInternational Collaboration \n\n\n\nThe festival’s relaunch is bolstered by co-curators Naoya Yoshikawa (Japan) and Suok-Won Yoon (South Korea). Yoshikawa has curated a Japanese student photography showcase in dialogue with work from Stellenbosch University students\, while Yoon has developed the Future Heritage exhibition featuring Boris Eldagsen (Germany)\, Mohau Modisakeng (South Africa)\, Ahn Jun (South Korea)\, and Koo Gi Jeong (South Korea). \n\n\n\nGlobal and Local Perspectives \n\n\n\nFrom Mauritius\, curators Karen Pang and Meha Desai present an exploration of the island’s complex heritage. Locally\, heritage-rich narratives will unfold in exhibitions such as Van Kalker Photo Studio at the District Six Museum and District Six through the lens of Jansje Wissema at the Cape Institute for Architecture. The Kilbourn Collection will be on view at the Sanlam Art Gallery\, and music writer Carsten Rasch brings a curated music photography showcase. \n\n\n\nCollaborations include projects with Senzeni Marasela and Namibian photographer Margaret Courtney-Clarke\, further expanding the festival’s scope. \n\n\n\nHeidi Erdmann\, Festival Director. Photo credit: Sean Wilson\n\n\n\nTalks\, Workshops\, and Kids’ Eyes \n\n\n\nThe TALKS programme highlights image-makers\, thinkers\, and institutions shaping photography today. The children’s exhibition\, Kids Eyes\, pairs images by young photographers with JM Coetzee’s Boyhood photo collection\, offering a unique historical and contemporary dialogue. \n\n\n\nIn a world saturated with images\, the festival aims to reaffirm photography’s power as a storytelling medium\, ranging from hard-hitting documentary work to AI-generated visual narratives. \n\n\n\nFor the full programme\, visit capetownphotofest.co.za.
