SUMMARY:Zanele Muholi Brings Kanye Nawe Home
DESCRIPTION:Zanele Muholi Finally Comes Home with Landmark Solo Exhibition Kanye Nawe \n\n\n\nAfter captivating audiences and teaching across the world\, internationally acclaimed South African visual activist and artist Zanele Muholi is bringing a major solo exhibition back home. Titled Kanye Nawe – Alongside You\, the exhibition opens on 18 July 2026 at Southern Guild Cape Town and will run until 10 September 2026\, offering South African audiences an opportunity to experience more than two decades of Muholi’s groundbreaking work. \n\n\n\nOccupying the entire Southern Guild gallery at Silo 5\, V&A Waterfront\, Kanye Nawe presents an immersive collection of photography\, sculpture and the award-winning documentary Difficult Love (2020). Together\, these works create a living archive that celebrates Black Queer identity\, visibility\, memory\, resilience and collective care while confronting histories of erasure\, discrimination and violence. \n\n\n\nA Powerful Homecoming \n\n\n\nThe exhibition represents far more than another gallery showcase—it is a deeply personal homecoming for Muholi. \n\n\n\nOpening during the artist’s birthday month\, Kanye Nawe coincides with several significant milestones. It celebrates twenty years of the influential Faces and Phases series\, commemorates two decades since the loss of Muholi’s nephew Nkanyiso and friends to the HIV/AIDS epidemic\, and marks twenty years since South Africa’s Civil Union Act. \n\n\n\nThese personal anniversaries align with important moments in the nation’s history\, including the 70th anniversary of the 1956 Women’s March\, the 50th anniversary of the 1976 Soweto Uprising\, and 30 years of South African democracy. \n\n\n\nReflecting on the significance of returning home\, Muholi said: \n\n\n\n\n“Coming home this year feels profound. South Africa is remembering the Women’s March of 1956\, fifty years since Soweto\, and thirty years of democracy. At the same time I celebrate twenty years of Faces and Phases and my own birthday month. Kanye Nawe is about being together\, about oneness. I am grateful to share this work with my people.” \n\n\n\n\nTwo Decades of Groundbreaking Work \n\n\n\nKanye Nawe brings together some of Muholi’s most celebrated bodies of work\, including: \n\n\n\n\nFaces and Phases\n\n\n\nOnly Half the Picture\n\n\n\nBeing\n\n\n\nMo(u)rning\n\n\n\nZaVa\n\n\n\nLiZa\n\n\n\nSomnyama Ngonyama (Hail the Dark Lioness)\n\n\n\n\nThe exhibition also introduces new bronze sculptures that expand Muholi’s artistic practice into three-dimensional form\, exploring themes of ancestry\, protection\, vulnerability\, identity and strength. \n\n\n\nFaces and Phases Continues to Inspire \n\n\n\nAt the heart of the exhibition is Faces and Phases\, Muholi’s ongoing portrait project launched in 2006 to document and honour Black LGBTQIA+ individuals while challenging hate crimes\, prejudice and invisibility. \n\n\n\nWhat began as a South African documentary project has evolved into an internationally recognised visual archive. The Cape Town exhibition features early South African portraits alongside more recent works created in cities including London\, Porto\, Panama City\, Los Angeles\, Salvador\, São Paulo and Venice\, demonstrating the global reach of Muholi’s vision while remaining deeply rooted in South African experiences. \n\n\n\nArt as Education and Collective Memory \n\n\n\nFor Muholi\, art extends beyond aesthetics—it serves as a powerful educational tool that preserves history and builds empathy. \n\n\n\nSpeaking about the exhibition’s purpose\, Muholi shared: \n\n\n\n\n“Art is a form of education. Through these images we teach ourselves and others to see\, to remember\, and to care. Every portrait\, every sculpture carries a story that belongs to our collective history. This is how we build dignity and understanding for generations to come. Ngiyabonga Mina.” \n\n\n\n\nA Rare Opportunity for South African Audiences \n\n\n\nFollowing acclaimed exhibitions at leading museums and galleries around the world\, and fresh from receiving the prestigious 2026 Hasselblad Award\, Kanye Nawe offers South Africans a rare opportunity to experience Muholi’s expansive body of work on home soil. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition stands as both a celebration of artistic excellence and a powerful affirmation of Black Queer stories within South Africa‘s cultural landscape\, inviting visitors to reflect on identity\, community\, remembrance and belonging.

SUMMARY:BMW Art Generation Turns Joburg Into a Cultural Hub
DESCRIPTION:BMW Art Generation Vol. IV\, contemporary African art Johannesburg\, FNB Art Joburg 2026\, BMW Art Haus\, African artists South Africa\, Joburg art events 2026\, indigenous knowledge art\, Johannesburg cultural events \n\n\n\nJohannesburg is about to become a meeting point for art\, ideas\, music and the questions that shape how we understand ourselves. \n\n\n\nFrom 29 August\, The BMW Art Generation Vol. IV will take over The BMW Art Haus in Parktown North\, while connecting with the MAX section of FNB Art Joburg’s 19th edition. Rather than functioning as a traditional exhibition confined to one room\, this year’s edition asks audiences to move through the city — and through different ways of thinking. \n\n\n\nAt the centre is a question that feels particularly relevant in a rapidly changing Africa: From Whose Waters Do We Drink? \n\n\n\nWho Gets To Define What We Know? \n\n\n\nConceptualised by Kim Kandan\, the exhibition challenges audiences to think about where knowledge comes from\, who carries it and how it changes as it moves between generations. \n\n\n\nThat makes the exhibition bigger than a collection of artworks. \n\n\n\nIt becomes a conversation about memory\, identity\, place\, inheritance and the knowledge systems that continue to influence contemporary African life. \n\n\n\nImportantly\, indigenous knowledge isn’t presented as something frozen in history. Instead\, the exhibition explores how these systems remain active\, adaptable and creatively powerful in the present. \n\n\n\nFor a young South African audience navigating questions around identity\, heritage and belonging\, that conversation hits close to home. \n\n\n\nAfrican Voices Take Centre Stage \n\n\n\nThe lineup brings together an extraordinary constellation of artists from Africa and the diaspora\, including Professor Berni Searle\, Bronwyn Katz\, donna Kukama\, Dr George Mahashe\, Mmakgabo Helen Sebidi\, Kemang Wa Lehulere\, Lady Skollie\, Lebohang Kganye\, Lindokuhle Sobekwa\, Nolan Oswald Dennis\, Pamela Phatsimo Sunstrum\, Robin Rhode\, Simnikiwe Buhlungu and Yinka Shonibare. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe exhibition’s strength lies not simply in the names on the wall\, but in the opportunity for different generations\, practices and perspectives to exist alongside one another. \n\n\n\nArt Meets Music\, Food and Joburg Energy \n\n\n\nThe opening weekend is designed less like a formal gallery visit and more like a full cultural experience. \n\n\n\nVisitors can start with a guided walkabout at midday\, join conversations at 13:00 and 15:00\, browse a reading room and bookstore curated with Jonathan Ball\, and spend time over local cuisine\, Methode Cap Classique and wine. \n\n\n\nThen the gallery atmosphere shifts. \n\n\n\nFrom 16:00 to 20:00\, music takes over\, with Thando Zide headlining Saturday and Nduduzo Makhathini closing out Sunday. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIt’s a reminder that Joburg’s cultural ecosystem doesn’t exist in separate boxes. Art\, music\, food\, fashion\, conversation and community constantly overlap. \n\n\n\nKeeping The Conversation Open \n\n\n\nFollowing the opening weekend\, The BMW Art Haus will reopen from 3 to 6 September\, with free viewing giving audiences the chance to return without the pressure of a one-day experience. \n\n\n\nThat accessibility matters. Great exhibitions aren’t only about seeing something once; they’re about giving people enough space to question\, reflect and come back with a different perspective. \n\n\n\nWith BMW South Africa\, FNB Art Joburg and participating artists bringing their platforms together\, BMW Art Generation Vol. IV positions Joburg as more than a destination for contemporary art. \n\n\n\nIt becomes a space where Africa’s past\, present and future can meet — and where the next generation gets to ask an important question: whose knowledge are we carrying forward?

SUMMARY:FNB Art Joburg Turns 19 in a City of 140
DESCRIPTION:Johannesburg is turning 140 this year\, and one of its biggest celebrations of creativity is turning 19. From 4–6 September 2026\, FNB Art Joburg returns to the Sandton Convention Centre\, bringing together artists\, galleries\, collectors\, cultural producers and curious audiences for another major chapter in the city’s contemporary art story. \n\n\n\nBut this isn’t simply another date for the art calendar. \n\n\n\nFNB Art Joburg has become a reflection of Johannesburg itself: ambitious\, restless\, diverse and constantly reinventing what is possible. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA Fair That Wants You to Look Again \n\n\n\nFor young South Africans\, contemporary art can sometimes feel like an exclusive world reserved for collectors and insiders. FNB Art Joburg is pushing against that perception by creating multiple ways to enter the conversation. \n\n\n\nIts established platforms span established galleries\, experimental spaces\, photography\, publishing\, large-scale installations\, artist-run initiatives\, talks\, screenings and performances. \n\n\n\nThis year\, the fair adds ARC\, a new section dedicated to artists and works that challenge convention. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThat addition feels particularly relevant to a creative generation that refuses to fit neatly into categories. \n\n\n\nARC is positioned as a space for discovery and critical inquiry\, foregrounding practices responding to the immediacy and complexity of contemporary African life. \n\n\n\nJohannesburg Becomes the Exhibition \n\n\n\nThe most exciting part may happen beyond the convention centre. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRunning from 20 August to 14 September\, Open City\, in partnership with Brand South Africa\, turns Johannesburg itself into an extended cultural platform. \n\n\n\nArt meets music\, fashion\, design\, food and performance across the city\, creating an access bridge between the formal art fair and the creative energy happening on Johannesburg’s streets. \n\n\n\nThat matters because the city’s cultural identity has never been confined to one building. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFrom independent creative spaces and galleries to fashion studios\, restaurants\, music venues and community-led initiatives\, Johannesburg’s creative economy thrives through connection. \n\n\n\nOpen City recognises that ecosystem and places the city’s cultural workers closer to the centre of the conversation. \n\n\n\nMore Than Art on a Wall \n\n\n\nFNB Art Joburg’s bigger proposition is that art can create opportunity\, spark uncomfortable conversations and help shape how Africa tells its own story. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor Johannesburg\, that message lands differently in its 140th year. \n\n\n\nThe city has always been shaped by people arriving with different histories\, ideas and ambitions and finding ways to create something new together. FNB Art Joburg taps directly into that spirit. \n\n\n\nIts 19th edition therefore arrives as more than a gathering of galleries and collectors. It is an invitation to see where African creativity is heading — and to ask who gets to shape that future. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor a city that refuses to stand still\, that feels like the right conversation to have. \n\n\n\nFNB Art Joburg 2026 takes place from 4–6 September at the Sandton Convention Centre\, while Open City runs across Johannesburg from 20 August to 14 September.
