Russian Bear Returns With a Culture-Defining Sneaker Takeover

Russian Bear Re-Enters Culture With a Next-Level Sneaker Takeover and Crowns the King of Kicks

Russian Bear marked a major return to South African street culture this past weekend with a high-impact finale for King of Kicks, a three-month culture-focused sneaker movement run in partnership with YFM. LevelThree in Sandton was transformed into a full-scale sneaker playground as the brand celebrated South Africa’s boldest sneaker lovers and crowned the country’s newest King of Kicks: Siyabonga Zondo.

For 12 weeks, the King of Kicks campaign tapped into the heartbeat of sneaker culture, inviting sneaker fans across Mzansi to showcase their knowledge, identity and personal style. Through weekly on-air battles, social challenges, polls and eliminations, the movement highlighted the true students of sneaker culture — individuals who understand that sneakers are more than footwear; they are expressions of personal story, taste and attitude.

From thousands of entries, three standout finalists emerged — one each from in-store challenges, YFM competitions and social media entries. Each finalist earned their spot through a combination of public votes, cultural insight and fearless passion for sneaker heritage.

A Finale Fit for Sneaker Royalty

On Saturday, 22 November, the energy peaked as finalists and sneaker enthusiasts gathered at LevelThree for the grand showdown. The venue was reimagined as Russian Bear’s throne room, complete with a central vault holding some of the rarest and most valuable sneakers available in South Africa.

The finalists competed in two high-pressure challenges for the chance to unlock the vault — and claim the title of King of Kicks.

Siyabonga Zondo rose to the top, entering the winning code and unveiling a R300 000 sneaker vault curated by premium Cape Town sneaker destination Story. The archive featured rare, limited-edition and culturally iconic sneakers, such as:

  • Jordan 4 Retro “Bred” Reimagined
  • Nike Air Force 1 Low Supreme
  • Adidas Forum ’84 Low Bape 30th Anniversary
  • Jordan 3 Retro OG SP A Ma Maniére
  • Nike Air Max 180 Vortex by A.P.C. Records
  • Jordan Travis Scott Jumpman Jack TR
  • Nike SB Dunk Low Futura Laboratories
  • Nike Air Yeezy 1 ‘Blink’ (valued at R119,000)
  • Jordan 1 Retro High Off-White “Chicago” (valued around R135,000)

While only one winner claimed the vault, the runners-up were also celebrated and rewarded with premium sneaker vouchers.

A Full Cultural Takeover

The finale doubled as a celebration of Mzansi’s vibrant creative scene. The night featured performances from DJ Doo-Wop, Kyotic, and the legendary DJ Ready D, alongside B-Boy showcases, street-inspired installations and energy-packed dance moments. Finalists were also treated to a shopping experience before the show, ensuring they stepped into the finale looking every bit like sneaker royalty.

A Movement Rooted in Culture

Siviwe Mgolodela, Senior Brand Manager for Russian Bear, highlighted the cultural significance of the campaign:

“Russian Bear continues to push culture forward by creating platforms that celebrate creativity, confidence and individuality. King of Kicks is our way of honouring South Africa’s sneaker community — a culture that defines next-level energy.”

Lizeanne Tessendorf, Head of Snell Portfolio and Innovation at Edward Snell & Co., added:

“Congratulations to Siyabonga Zondo and to the remarkable finalists who brought their best every week. We also thank YFM and Story for their passion and contribution. We cannot wait to take King of Kicks to even greater heights next year.”
