DStv Turns 30: Celebrating Three Decades of Connection, Culture and Innovation

DStv marks a remarkable milestone today—30 years of transforming South Africa’s television landscape, connecting millions of households, and telling stories that have become part of the national conversation.

When South Africans first tuned in to M-Net in October 1986, few could have imagined the revolution that would follow. Broadcasting only a few hours each night as an encrypted analogue channel, M-Net laid the groundwork for a new era in entertainment. Less than a decade later, on 6 October 1995, MultiChoice launched DStv, the world’s second digital satellite television service—and the first outside the United States.

From Caravan to Continent: The Growth of a Media Giant

What started in a caravan in Randburg quickly grew into one of Africa’s most influential media networks. By 2005, DStv had surpassed one million subscribers; by 2010, the number had soared to 2.4 million families. Today, more than 14 million homes across Africa, from Johannesburg to Lagos and Nairobi, count DStv as part of their daily rhythm.

Launched with only 16 channels in 1995, DStv now offers over 140 channels, catering to every viewer through packages that range from DStv Access (R99 per month) to Premium (R699 per month). With DStv Stream, customers can enjoy their favourite content anytime, anywhere—reflecting DStv’s ongoing commitment to innovation and accessibility.

A Legacy of Storytelling

From classics like Carte Blanche, Egoli and KTV in its early years, to the creation of kykNET (1999), Africa Magic (2003), and Mzansi Magic (2010), DStv has always been a home for authentic African storytelling. More recent productions such as The River, Big Brother, and Shaka iLembe have continued that tradition—earning international recognition and multiple International Emmy nominations between 2022 and 2025.

Sporting Excellence: Three Decades of Unforgettable Moments

Alongside its entertainment achievements, SuperSport—also turning 30 in 2025—has been central to DStv’s success. From Bafana Bafana’s 1996 AFCON win to the Springboks’ four Rugby World Cup triumphs, and from the 2010 FIFA World Cup to Tatjana Smith’s Olympic gold in Paris 2024, SuperSport has broadcast South Africa’s most iconic sporting moments, uniting fans across generations.

Innovation at Every Turn

DStv’s history is one of constant innovation—from Africa’s first personal video recorder (PVR) and HD broadcasts, to BoxOffice, DStv Explora, streaming services, and the T.U.M.I AI chatbot for customer support. Over the years, DStv has consistently evolved to meet changing viewing habits and technological advances.

“Our story has always been tied to the country’s own—from the early days of Open Time in the 90s, through the 1995 Rugby World Cup and the dawn of democracy, to today’s iconic local shows and unforgettable sporting moments.
Thirty years on, our commitment remains the same—to connect South Africans through great content, trusted service, and real value.”

Looking Ahead: A New Era with CANAL+

With CANAL+ now a partner at the MultiChoice Group level, DStv’s future promises continued investment in local storytelling, live sport, and cutting-edge technology. As DStv steps into this next chapter, it remains guided by its founding purpose: to bring people together through content that matters.

To mark the 30th anniversary, special offers and celebrations are planned for November and December, ensuring South Africans across the nation can share in this historic moment.
