M-Net Local Drama Summertide Surfs onto the Global Stage with US Streamer Acorn TV

After wrapping up its first season on M-Net earlier this year, South Africa’s beloved 52-episode family drama Summertide is making waves globally through its new home on US-based streaming service Acorn TV. The show also remains available for South African viewers on DStv Stream, Catch Up, and Showmax.

The heartfelt series has received critical acclaim from international publications, including The New York Times, which praises its emotional depth and slow-burn storytelling, likening it to Everwood with a scenic coastal twist. TV critic Margaret Lyons noted, “The miracle here is that Summertide is not a murder show or a cop show… it’s sketched on a human scale.”

Set in False Bay, Summertide follows marine biologist and widowed father Martin Field (Frank Rautenbach) as he rebuilds his life and opens a penguin rehabilitation centre while raising his two teenagers. With strong generational dynamics, small-town challenges, and heartfelt themes, the show resonates far beyond its local setting.

“We’re always proud to see local productions finding audiences on the global stage. Summertide proves that South African stories have global appeal.”

says Waldimar Pelser, Channel Director: Premium Channels at MultiChoice Group

Produced by Red Letter Day Pictures, the show is a shining example of local talent meeting international standards.

“We are incredibly excited. The cast and crew poured their hearts into every episode, and it’s amazing to see that effort recognised globally.”

says producer Rene Van Rooyen

Whether you’re new to the series or catching up, Summertide is now streaming on Acorn TV, DStv Stream, and Showmax.
