Gen Z in the Spotlight: Showmax Stars Share What Youth Day Means in 2025

Gen Z isn’t waiting for permission — they’re already changing the world.

Whether they’re breaking stereotypes on-screen or starting tough conversations offline, the new wave of South African youth is loud, proud, and taking up space. In celebration of Youth Day 2025, Showmax sat down with rising stars from hit series Youngins, Soft Life, and Adulting to unpack what this day means to them — and how their stories are reshaping how we see the youth of today.

Lebohang Lephatsoana – Youngins

As Tumelo in Youngins, Lebohang delivers a moving portrayal of a queer teen navigating identity, rejection, and self-discovery. It’s a role that’s resonated deeply with audiences — and with him.

“Playing Tumelo has been life-changing. It’s more than a role, it’s a message. I still get goosebumps thinking about the impact it has, especially for queer youth.”

he shares

For Lebohang, Youth Day is personal.

“I proudly wear my school shirt on June 16 to honour those who paved the way. Education was fought for. Freedom wasn’t free.”

Ayakha Ntunja – Youngins

Ayakha credits her role in Youngins with awakening a sense of purpose and pride in being Gen Z.

“We have so much to bring to the table: ideas, energy, creativity. Youngins helped me see that we deserve space in every industry.”

she says

She hopes the show inspires more open conversations between teens and parents — and sheds light on silent battles many young people fight alone.

Zimi Mphefu – Soft Life

Zimi’s role as Buhle in Soft Life takes on the realities of loss, family secrets, and growing up fast.

“Teenagers go through so much, but they’re often overlooked. This show reminded me how much support young people need to truly thrive.”

she says

For Zimi, Youth Day is both a remembrance and a call to action.

“We’re the shakers and agitators. But we also need love, guidance, and a safe space to grow.”

Siphesihle Khanyile – Adulting

As Ncumisa in Adulting, Siphesihle embodies the struggles of young single parents, grief, and survival.

“The show has helped people talk about tough stuff, like unemployment, early pregnancy and father-daughter dynamics,”.

she explains

To her, Youth Day is about hope — and the future.

“The future is too bright, ma-G!”.

From calling out outdated norms to championing inclusive storytelling, Gen Z is leading conversations in culture, identity, and social justice. Shows like Youngins, Soft Life, and Adulting aren’t just entertainment — they’re cultural megaphones echoing the voices of today’s youth.
