BIGGER BOAT, BIGGER LEGACY! National Geographic Celebrates 50 Years of Jaws With the Only Authorized Documentary – JAWS @ 50: The Definitive Inside Story

BIGGER BOAT, BIGGER LEGACY!

National Geographic is diving deep into the legacy of one of the most iconic films ever made with JAWS @ 50: The Definitive Inside Story – the only authorized documentary commemorating the 50th anniversary of Jaws. Directed by celebrated filmmaker Laurent Bouzereau (Faye, Music by John Williams), this 90-minute special premieres across Africa on Sunday, 13 July at 21:00 CAT on National Geographic (DStv 181 / StarTimes 220), and will stream on Disney+ in South Africa.

More than just a film retrospective, JAWS @ 50 is an unprecedented look at the chaos, creativity, and cultural shockwaves behind the 1975 classic that changed cinema—and our perception of sharks—forever.

The Ultimate Deep Dive Into Spielberg’s Breakthrough

Produced in partnership with Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Documentaries, Nedland Films, and Wendy Benchley, the documentary features exclusive interviews with Spielberg himself, offering raw insight into the troubled production of Jaws, including his now-famous battle with a malfunctioning mechanical shark and the emotional toll of filming on open water.

In addition to never-before-seen behind-the-scenes footage and personal archives from both Spielberg and the Benchley family, the film includes reflections from original cast and crew members such as Joe Alves, Lorraine Gary, Carl Gottlieb, Jeffrey Kramer, and Ian Shaw (son of Robert Shaw), along with Jaws composer John Williams.

A Blockbuster’s Lasting Ripple Effect

What makes JAWS @ 50 a must-watch isn’t just the behind-the-scenes revelations—it’s how the documentary contextualizes the film’s enduring impact on pop culture, cinema, and shark conservation. Jaws didn’t just terrify audiences—it inspired generations of filmmakers and marine biologists alike.

The documentary gathers some of Hollywood’s biggest names—George Lucas, J.J. Abrams, Jordan Peele, Guillermo del Toro, James Cameron, Robert Zemeckis, Emily Blunt, and more—who share how Jaws shaped their storytelling and their awe for the ocean.

From Shark Terror to Shark Advocacy

A significant portion of the documentary reexamines the so-called “Jaws effect”—the widespread fear of sharks that followed the film’s release. Instead, JAWS @ 50 reframes that legacy through the lens of curiosity and conservation, spotlighting the marine advocates working to restore sharks’ image as majestic and essential creatures.

Viewers will hear from ocean experts like Philippe Cousteau, Candace Fields, Austin Gallagher, Gibbs Kuguru, Dr. John Mandelman, Dr. Greg Skomal, and National Geographic Explorer Brian Skerry, who all credit the original film for sparking their lifelong dedication to marine science and shark advocacy.

The documentary also features heartfelt commentary from Wendy Benchley, wife of Jaws author Peter Benchley, as well as their children and family, adding emotional weight to the story behind the story.

Celebrate 50 Years of Jaws With National Geographic’s SHARKFEST

Part of SHARKFEST 2025, National Geographic’s annual tribute to sharks and the ocean, JAWS @ 50: The Definitive Inside Story premieres during a month-long programming slate that wouldn’t exist without the cultural juggernaut that was Jaws.
