Oliver Lutz Unveils ‘Paffee Mountain’ & ‘Old & Wise’ Ahead of Calamari Fantasy

Acclaimed German jazz bassist Oliver Lutz continues his sonic evolution with Calamari Fantasy, a genre-defying album that fuses jazz, funk, and electronic elements. As anticipation builds, Lutz unveils ‘Paffee Mountain’ (14 March 2025) and ‘Old & Wise’ (4 April 2025), the second pair of singles from the project, recorded with his RE:CALAMARI Band.

‘Paffee Mountain’ – A Synth-Led Tribute to Nature

Inspired by one of Lutz’s favorite sightseeing spots near Cologne, Paffee Mountain is a sweeping composition driven by tribal percussion, warm strings, and a soaring synth-sax melody.

“Some presets instantly inspire, almost telling stories on their own. When I follow that inspiration, the right chords and melodies practically find themselves—synths are truly magical!”

Lutz crafted the piece using a vintage DX7 synthesizer, explaining:

‘Old & Wise’ – A Timeless Groove

Arriving in early April, Old & Wise introduces a laid-back, groove-heavy sound reminiscent of Bob James but with a modern twist. Composed entirely on classical guitar, its marimba mellotron textures create a smooth, cinematic atmosphere.

“The melody seemed to find itself naturally,” says Lutz. “The relaxed, chill vibe just came together organically.”

About Calamari Fantasy

Scheduled for release later in 2025, Calamari Fantasy showcases Lutz’s growth as a composer over three years. Blending deep grooves, futuristic synths, and daring improvisation, the album pushes jazz into new territories, incorporating funk, fusion, and cinematic soundscapes.

Band Lineup:

  • Oliver Lutz – Electric Bass
  • Tineke Postma – Saxophone
  • Pablo Held – Synthesizer, Keyboards
  • Peter Gall – Drums, Percussion

With Paffee Mountain and Old & Wise, Oliver Lutz offers a glimpse into an album that promises boundary-pushing jazz innovation.
