Mpumi Mpama: No Pressure in Portraying the New Khaya Bhodoza on Empini
Actor and voiceover artist Mpumi Mpama (Legacy, Queendom, The Queen) takes on the role of private security mogul Khaya Bhodoza in Empini Season 2, premiering on Showmax on Tuesday, 4 March 2025. Mpama steps into the shoes of Siyabonga Twala, who previously played the cunning and ruthless character in Season 1, one of Showmax’s most-streamed series last year.
In a candid conversation with Zibuyile Dladla, Mpama shared his approach to redefining the character, overcoming physical challenges, and his excitement for the upcoming season.
Making Khaya Bhodoza His Own
When asked how he approached portraying a character already established by another actor, Mpama revealed a bold and independent strategy.
“For me, it wasn’t a big challenge. I decided not to watch the previous episodes because, as an artist, I believe in interpreting a character in my own way. If I had watched Siyabonga Twala’s portrayal, my mind might have subconsciously picked up on his mannerisms. That could have influenced my portrayal,”.
he explained
Instead, Mpama chose to focus on personalizing the role.
“Someone once asked me, ‘How does it feel to step into Siya’s shoes?’ And I said, ‘No, he took his shoes with him.’ I respect his legacy, but now I’m creating my own.”
This approach allowed Mpama to bring his unique vision to the character.
“You can’t worry too much about audience perception. Once you understand the character and bring the writing to life, that’s what resonates with viewers.”
Overcoming Challenges and Embracing Action
While he didn’t feel the pressure of audience expectations, Mpama faced other challenges, particularly in the action-heavy nature of Season 2.
“Viewers will see a more physical and brutal side of Khaya this season. The action scenes were challenging in a good way. As an artist, you want roles that push you,”.
Mpama said
To prepare, he hit the gym to build stamina, but the intense stunts weren’t without mishaps.
“Of course, not everything goes smoothly. There are always hiccups—you pull stunts and sometimes get injured. But that’s normal for a show with so much action.”
Researching for Authenticity
As a Xhosa man playing a Zulu character, Mpama emphasized the importance of research.
“As an actor, it’s crucial to dive deep into your role. I studied different Zulu accents and practised the language until it felt natural. Audiences are intelligent, and they’ll notice if you’re not authentic. You’re representing a culture, so you need to respect it and do it justice.”
