Showmax Beats Netflix, Wins Best Television/Streaming Network at National Film and TV Awards South Africa

Showmax celebrated a significant victory at the National Film and TV Awards South Africa, claiming the title of Best Television/Streaming Network at an awards ceremony held on Saturday, 9 November 2024, at the Opera House in Tshwane. Demonstrating the strength of its locally focused programming, Showmax content earned an impressive 14 awards—the most for any streaming service at the event.

The Real Housewives Ultimate Girls Trip – South Africa

Among the highlights of Showmax’s wins were top awards across diverse categories. Notably:

  • The Real Housewives Ultimate Girls Trip – South Africa, a Showmax Original produced by GOAT and set in Jamaica, earned both Best Reality Series and Best Female TV Personality for Lethabo LeJoy.
  • The Mommy Club, produced by POP24, claimed Best Non-Scripted TV Series.
  • Supersport’s Chasing The Sun, following South Africa’s Rugby World Cup journey, took home Best Documentary.
  • The gripping Showmax Original Red Ink, adapted from Angela Makholwa’s thriller, saw Bonko Khoza win Best Actor for his portrayal of serial killer Napoleon Dingiswayo, while Lorcia Cooper won Best Supporting Actress as Detective Morapedi.
  • Empini’s Nambitha Ben-Mazwi took Best Actress for her role as bodyguard Ndoni.

Other Showmax winners at the National Film and TV Awards included Diepe Waters (Best Afrikaans TV Series), Mzansi Magic’s My Brother’s Keeper (Best Actor in a TV Series for S’dumo Mtshali), Gqeberha: The Empire (Best Actress in a TV Series for Zikhona Sodlaka), and The Butcher’s Soul, for which Vuyo Dabula won Best Supporting Actor in his return following a near-fatal shooting incident. Newcomer Katlego Lebogang was also celebrated for her work as detective Phumeza in the Showmax Original Spinners.

This year, Spinners claimed Best Foreign Series at Shanghai’s Magnolia Awards, and Catch Me A Killer became the first South African series at Series Mania, winning Best Production Design at the British Film Designers Guild Awards. Showmax’s content has also been recognized at the Seoul International Drama Awards, the Venice TV Awards, and MIP Africa, where Wyfie and Beaulah: Queens van die Kaap won for LGBTQIA+ representation.

Upcoming highlights for Showmax include the much-anticipated finale of The Penguin, a Batman spinoff, and the premiere of Dune: Prophecy. Also arriving soon are Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist, featuring acclaimed actors Don Cheadle and Taraji P. Henson, The Real Housewives of Dubai S2, and Kung Fu Panda 4.
