Thabiso Ramotshela is back as Mahlatsi in Youngins, the Showmax Original youth drama that’s capturing hearts and turning heads across South Africa. Since its return, Youngins has quickly become one of Showmax‘s top 10 most-watched series, and it’s up for several high-profile awards. This November, it’s nominated for Best South African Streaming Series at the Behind The Scenes Awards and Best Newcomer (Kealeboga Masango) at the National Film & TV Awards South Africa. It’s also contending for the Media Award of the Year at The Feather Awards, Africa’s largest queer awards event, celebrating LGBTQIA+ representation and storytelling.

With Season 2 premiering on Showmax on 15 November, Youngins is back to delve deeper into the lives of the Olifants Five, and Ramotshela is excited to rejoin the ensemble. Speaking with Xabiso Ngqabe, Thabiso shares his experience, the growth of his character, and the bonds he’s formed with his castmates.

Building on Lessons from The River

Reflecting on his role in The River, Ramotshela reveals that it was a formative experience where he absorbed invaluable lessons from the show’s veteran cast, including Presley Chweneyagae and Sindi Dlathu.

“On The River, I was still learning under the wings of so many experienced people. Then Youngins became the platform where I could finally apply everything I had learned over the years.”

The Impact of Playing Mahlatsi

For Thabiso, Youngins feels like a generational moment.

“I see this show as the Yizo Yizo of my generation. Being on Youngins allows me to embrace youth, make mistakes, and be part of something historic.”

he says

He attributes his growth to Tshedza Pictures producers Phathu Makwarela and Gwydion Beynon, whom he praises for seeing his potential and shaping him as an actor.

Bringing Authenticity to Mahlatsi

The overwhelming fan response to his character, Mahlatsi, took Thabiso by surprise.

“The love I’ve received has been incredible. Mahlatsi is different from the typical high school ‘nerd.’ I think he’s misunderstood, and viewers connect with that.”

he shares

His collaboration with co-star Lebogang Lephatsoana, who plays Tumelo, has also been pivotal in shaping their characters’ dynamic.

“The term ‘mogweri’ that Tumelo uses was my idea. I thought it would add a fun, unique touch to his character.”

The Struggles and Growth of Mahlatsi in Season 2

In the upcoming season, Thabiso hints that Mahlatsi is in a more isolated state, despite being surrounded by friends.

“He’s alone. Even though he’s helping others, he feels isolated,”.

Ramotshela explains

Playing this complex character has taught him to appreciate the people in his own life.

“I have my dad, but Mahlatsi doesn’t know his. Despite his challenges, he remains positive. This role has humbled me.”

After intense scenes, Ramotshela says he often calls his mom to decompress.

“Sometimes, I just sleep it off. These characters feel safe in me, and by God’s grace, I hope they don’t harm me.”

Season 2 Excitement: A Relatable Story with Raw Emotions

Ramotshela is confident that Season 2 will be even more impactful than the first.

“The fact that people went crazy for Season 1 makes me feel like they haven’t seen anything yet,”.

he says

The new season dives deep into youth culture and struggles, combining relatable storylines with impressive character depth. For Thabiso, Youngins represents young Africans reclaiming their narratives, a powerful message for the continent.
