Adire: A Nollywood Showcase by FilmOne Studios Takes Centre Stage at MIP Africa
FilmOne, Nigeria‘s leading film distribution and production company, is set to make a powerful statement at the upcoming MIP Africa event at FAME Week Africa with the exclusive screening of Adire, a groundbreaking Nollywood masterpiece; this would be FilmOne‘s first original. Adire premiers at MIP Africa on Sunday, 3 September 2023.
Adire is a captivating and community driven film that delves into the heart of Nigerian culture, weaving together a compelling narrative that explores identity, tradition, and the enduring spirit of its people. With its outstanding storytelling and production values, “Adire” has quickly become one of the most highly anticipated films of the year. It is a celebration of African heritage and a testament to the rich storytelling tradition that Nollywood is known for.
Set against the backdrop of a small, conservative village in Oyo town, the film tells the story of Adire, a retired prostitute on the run, who moves to a small town and starts a lingerie-making business (made from a signature Nigerian material, adire). This business inevitably empowers the conservative women of the town, but also angers the self-instilled leader, Folasade, the deaconess and wife to the preacher of the town’s local church. Adire soon discovers the most unusual friendships and love in the unlikeliest of places. However, her paradise is cut short by ‘Captain’, her former pimp whose money she stole to start a new life.
The film is directed by renowned filmmaker, Adeoluwa ‘Captain Degzy’ Owu, with Emmanuel ‘Cinemmaofficial’ Igbekele Odihiri as Director of Photography, written and created by Jack’enneth Opukeme, Produced by Mimi Bartels, Barbara Babarinsa. Adire stars Kehinde Bankole and features a stellar cast that includes Funlola Aofiyebi-Raimi, Kelechi Udegbe, Femi Branch, Yemi Blaq, Tomi Ojo, Mike Afolarin, Ifeanyi Kalu, Ibrahim Chatta, Lizzy Jay, Idowu Phillips, Yvonne Jegede, Jack’enneth Opukeme, and Layi Wasabi.
The film is a testament to FilmOne‘s commitment to producing and distributing quality African content that resonates with audiences both locally and globally.
“We are thrilled to showcase Adire at MIP Africa, it just felt right. This film is a testament to the incredible talent and creativity within not just the African but Nigerian film industry. We believe that Adire will not only captivate audiences but also spark important conversations about our culture, prejudice and heritage.”
