Bala Desejo – Baile De Máscaras (Recarnaval) / Lua Comanche
‘Baile De Máscaras (Recarnaval)’ and ‘Lua Comanche’ combine to comprise the first radio single taken from ‘Sim Sim Sim’, the Latin Grammy award-winning debut album from Bala Desejo. A band who are at the forefront of Rio de Janeiro’s artistic renaissance, they channel influences of Brazilian 60s Tropicália, 70s psychedelia and MPB to create a nostalgic, yet joyfully, avant-garde sound.
The band is comprised of four distinct characters, each one an incredible talent in their own right and each with impressive credentials in the Brazilian Independent music scene.
With this double A-side single, we present two Brazilian anthems in the making. ‘Baile De Máscaras (Recarnaval)’ sees Bala Desejo in carnival mood. It is madcap, uplifting and driving. The guitar line invigorates the track, whilst vocals, strings and horns duel as it builds to a joyous climax.
‘Lua Comanche’ was composed by all four band members. At the time they were going monthly to a place in Minas Gerais to write the songs for the debut album. They realised that their visits were always coinciding with the full moon [lua cheia in Portuguese). When they continued writing this composition, they went deeper into researching the Comanche people and discovered that they always carried out their expeditions at night, illuminated by the full moon.
There is a warm, nostalgic feel to ‘Lua Comanche’, you can hear the melodic lines of MPB and samba-canção of the 1960s, and of vocal groups such as Quarteto em Cy. Here the band showcase their vocal prowess as they interweave and overlap whilst sharing lead duties. They maintain a natural balance and a wonderful group harmony.
